The Classic/Retro Pop Culture Thread

Yeah, the 70s Spelling shows all had similar vibes: Mod Squad, Rookies, SWAT, Charlie's Angels, Starsky & Hutch, Vega$, Hart To Hart. They were all clearly in the same universe. I always wished for some crossovers, but it never happened (except for that Dan Tanna cameo in Angels).

Aug 27-28...meh, they show this on H&I:

Trivia: The Dobie Gillis cast was the basis for the Scooby-Doo characters. Fred was Dobie, Shaggy was Maynard, Daphne was Thalia, and Velma was Zelda.

I had to chuckle when watching the last Fall Guy episode on Decades. The man who the suspect supposedly murdered was named Fred Danza, yet twice in the episode one of the actors slips up and says 'Tony' Danza. I guess the editor/sound mixer missed that one.

I've had it on in the background some, not paying too much attention. A vaguely remembered Mad/Cracked parody was on the nose in calling out the series' cheesecake factor. Seems like they didn't miss any opportunity to get Heather Thomas in a bikini, and sometimes the guest actresses joined the fun.

Sounds good. Too bad I didn't get a chance to watch any of them. I did notice that Farrah was in the two-part premiere.

I recorded a few of the Alfred Hitchcock Hour episodes to watch with my Mother on Saturdays and we saw a couple this week. The first was a really good one with Bob Newhart playing an apparently mild-mannered nebbish with a devious streak. The second was a complicated mess with Norman Fell and James Gregory that featured ex-cons, a bizarre plot to steal a payroll safe, awkward young love, teenage pregnancy, a government task force, and a random supply of Cobalt giving everyone radiation poisoning.

I'm assuming they were still married at the time. She was still a pretty big star in the early 80s.

They've been known to change their minds. But Bob Newhart is great. I'll definitely have that binge on for the weekend.

I wasn't into Bob Newhart as a kid, but it has a fondness attached to it from being one of that block of shows that was always on Saturday nights when my sister and I would spend the night at Grandma's, while the parents were out doing whatever.

So, speaking of Saturdays...turns out that the MeTV Super SciFi Saturday Night shakeup is giving some shows a new home. Just saw a commercial on H&I for a new "Comic Book Heroes" block on Saturdays starting September 10.

5 a.m. EST: Two episodes of The Green Hornet
6 a.m. EST: Two episodes of Adventures of Superman
7 a.m. EST: Two episodes of Batman
8 a.m. & 9 a.m.: Two episodes of Tarzan
10 a.m. & 11 a.m.: Two episodes of The Greatest American Hero
12 p.m.: Two episodes of Swamp Thing
1 p.m.: Sheena
2 p.m. & 3 p.m.: Two episodes of Xena: Warrior Princess
4 p.m. & 5 p.m.: Two episodes of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

Then they switch to the obligatory cop shows.

I'm suddenly not missing Me as much anymore...you can keep your damn Love Boat! :p

Is that the Irish McCalla Sheena? The order is a little weird, but that's pretty good-- a whole day of Pulp/comic book characters.

No, I think it's this one, which I've never seen.
That's what I'm thinking, it looks like the schedule is broken up with an early half of pre-90s shows and a second half with 90s stuff. H&I already shows a lot of Hercules and Xena so I think that is just a bonus if you will to the block.

If you watched H&I in the morning and then switch to MeTV in the evening you could have a whole day of "comic book" retro TV.
