I wonder whether it would have made for a better pilot to see the "episode" before The Cage that resulted in Pike's funk rather than witnessing the aftermath with only allusions to what occurred.

I don't think it's necessary, because we end up seeing it anyway when the Talosians make Pike relive it.

Not really....we see him and Vina go into a castle and get attacked, but there's no real context, and certainly nobody gets killed.

To Kirk, as long as you're wearing a red shirt, it's like you don't exist.

If you look at how many people from each shirt color group are killed, it's actually pretty even. There are one or two more red shirts than in either of the other two groups, but the red shirts aren't the vast majority.

I will say that a pet idea of mine would be to see an animated feature or series that picks up after "The Cage" leaves off

It might be interesting to back the story up a couple of years and pick up Pike and the Enterprise there. Then somewhere in season two have the Rigel episode, followed by a retelling of the Talos adventure.
