The Buttons on Kirk's Chair

Most of them don't even do the same thing from one episode to the next. Although I believe there is a communicator button which Kirk was seen using in several episodes...but the rest of them, do whatever the writers want.
 
Court Martial used it as a major plot-point.

I always wondered if there was some sort of holder near the intercom that held the record tapes so they wouldn't whiz off when Kirk spun the chair. The Franz Joseph Technical Manual just showed an empty space where the "tapes" typically sat.

One of the buttons activates Sulu's reaction shot when something's happening on the main viewer.
 
I think one of them activated the ejector seats on the bridge. Piss James T. off, and flying you will go!
 
You tell us......what do the individual buttons do on Kirk's command chair?

Button 1 was for alert status.

Button 2 controlled the ion pod.

Button 3 cut Sulu, Scotty and Chekov's lines as needed (often replaced due to wear).

Button 4 notified Roddenberry that it was time for Superstar Bill to get a raise (also replaced often due to wear).
