The Brilliant Book of Doctor Who 2011 Preview Images

I'm interested but ambivalent about the promise of a story by Brian W. Aldiss.

On one hand, it's fiction by a big-name sf writer and critic.
But on the other hand, it's Brian W. Aldiss.
 
That first image looks exactly like what could be the cover of the last UK "vanilla" DVD for Series 5. Or maybe it was, for all I know...
 
Oh and the third edition of Doctor Who The Visual Dictionary arrived this morning, going to go pick it up from my parents house.
 
Well this is an awesome book...the folks at DK actually restructured the book instead of just pinning on new stuff at the end of the book like they have done in the previous two editions. The Eleventh Doctor is featured prominently as one would expect, his profile is like two pages. There is a foldout of the new Tardis interior but not as extensive as the RTD era Tardis interior art work was. There are profiles on pretty much everything that appeared in the Specials and series five, there is a two page splash on the Time Lords and Gallifrey. The Power Ranger Daleks are covered. Amy and Rory have profile pages to themselves. I think this book is way better than the previous two books were...the cover even seems different.
 
My copy finally arrived this morning and man...it may have an oh so stupid name as mentioned above by Candelight but this is a must have book for series five fans. It has your traditional episode by episode synopsis, behind the scenes and facts and little interesting anecdotes for that episode. A map of Leadsworth, little inserts and script excerpts, the tease of future events to come that was posted above is presented by the Dream Lord. There is original Doctor Who fiction, tons of photos and behind the scenes stuff. Artwork. Interviews with Matt Smith and Steven Moffat. I daresay that this book is way better than the Insider's Guide Books for Series 1 and 2 that we got a few years ago. Great stuff and worth the 30 bucks I paid for it.

It's an ok book I guess, I picked up in Tesco about a month ago for £6, I wouldn't pay full price though for it, it reminds me of the Annuals you can get for Christmas.
 
We don't get the annuals over here so I can't comment about the comparison, but I am quite satisfied with the book considering that I had to wait almost two and a half weeks for it. I forgot about the section on River Song too. It's almost like an expansion of the DK Doctor Who Visual Dictionary. Maybe I'm easy but I'm pretty impressed with this.

Just a quick note on that point, the Annuals are easy to obtain worldwide. I buy them every year through either Amazon Canada (my first choice), Amazon UK, or more recently Book Depository now that they ship to Canada. Same with the annual Doctor Who Storybook (though I hear this year's edition got cancelled :( ). Granted, once the year has past the books tend to fall into "collectors item" status once the stocks run out. You'll never find them on the racks at Chapters or Barnes & Noble, but they're pretty easy to obtain these days, and I'd recommend them as there have been some interesting stories and comic strips, many written by people involved with the series. And let's not forget "Blink" was based upon a story that first appeared in either the 2006 Storybook or 2006 Annual (I forget which).

The 2006 Annual and 2007-09 Storybooks, by Panini, are anthologies of several short stories and a comics strip, plus usually some bonus features, like Davies's "Meet the Doctor" thing, and silly games. The 2007-11 Annuals, which are by the BBC, are supposedly not so great, but I haven't read them myself.
 
I'm aware of what the annuals are, The Brilliant Book though is about twice the page length of what an annual normally is which is like 96 pages or something like that, I've never bothered with them. I think this book has tons more stuff than the previous annuals have had.

Also not sure if this has been posted elsewhere that in the interview with Moffat he reveals that we will learn who River is this series and that he's known for a very, very long time. Alex Kingston in her interview also stated that she's had a pretty good idea who River is.

Then why did you ask?
 
I asked because the 2011 Annual looks completely different from the Brilliant Book of Doctor Who which was like a companion book than an annual.
