The bridge of the USS Odyssey

Totally impressive rendering!
Love getting lost in the articles over at Ex Astris Scientia . :D

Holy Hannah, that`s brilliant! An excellent piece of deductive reconstruction and artistic smoothing-over. I`d have that as a primary bridge any day - only with the addition of Galaxy-esque side consoles for the two flanking chairs. I know there are other examples of console-less chairs in the fleet (Insurrection being a prime candidate), but I like my officers with something to do besides just sit there. :)

Also, there WAS an indication of Conn/Ops consoles in the episode - right after the initial exchange, we see an officer being hurled forward in a chair as the XO passes behind him. That station does seem to be on the same level as the three command chairs, which I don't like at all (even though that's exactly what we have on the E-D), so I'll accept that there's a "pit" for those stations to be in.

All told, fantastic work!

I hate the fact that they forgot the little consoles in Insurrection. :p The future Enterprise bridge in All Good Things has the same problem, though being an Admiral's ship I see those as seats for observers, so no need for consoles there.

On the Odyssey however they do have consoles, they simply have to stand up and go behind the seat, something we see both the first and second officers do. It's a unique setup, but I can see its usefulness.

And yes, we have that guy there in the first shot of the damaged bridge, however he's not sitting, just standing up there. If I were to have been super strict about it, I'd imagine there could be two standing consoles at the front, rather than the usual conn/ops consoles from the Enterprise.

Heh, you're right. On review, I realized the forward crewer was standing (and leaning against a console? He was almost certainly holding onto something so he could do his flailing about) and not seated. Interestingly, the USS Equinox had forward consoles you could work equally well seated or standing over, so there's precedent for that; but I like the simpler explanation that there are standard Conn/Ops stations up there and this guy was just standing next to one for whatever reason. Or, Keogh was always standing in the middle of pitched battle so that he could see past the people stationed in front of him. ;)

As for the Odyssey's horseshoe, I *guess* that could be the default place for the XO and second officer to push buttons and hold on, as there is certainly enough room for three people up there. The XO did an awful lot of running around for little reason (unless he was helping people recover from exploding consoles), but there was one ND up there in what would be a typically Worf-esque tactical officer's position, from which he doesn't move for the time we see him.

Neither Keogh nor his flanking officers used their chairs once the lights went out, despite all the shuddering; I guess for this particular bridge config it makes sense for them to push buttons where there are MORE buttons to push when in alert conditions. That, or they never complained to the guys who designed the bridge that they literally had NO buttons to push on their chairs and lived in envy of their counterparts on the Enterprise and Yamato, who had plenty of buttons on or near their chairs.

Always liked the Odyssey's bridge, seemed a more practical than the E-D's.

Best galaxy bridge yet

I was thinking that I like this design more than the Enterprise-D. There's something about the Ent-D bridge that doesn't work for me. I don't want to speculate, but it has the feeling that the designers were more about looks than functionality. I know some designers know what each station is for and how it would be used, but I don't get that sense from the Ent-D. Perhaps its due to the modular nature of the stations, thanks to the touchscreens and LCARS. I've heard of some shows where the creators almost choreograph the use of the stations.

The Odyssey seems more like a bridge with functions and therefore is more efficient. Seems strange to say that for a set we only saw partially in one episode.

Ira Steven Behr must have saved the Odyssey dedication plaque.

I love the quote. I wonder how many times it, or similar phrases, were uttered in Trek.

Love the quote from 2001, perfect for the Odyssey. It's great that so many of the designers and artists on DS9 were longtime Star Trek and science fiction fans.

I was always so puzzled as to why the Enterprise-D bridge from TNG wasn't used. But, I'm sure the logic was simply that it either wasn't available at the time or we were going to see so little of the Odyssey bridge that it didn't matter either way.

Nice bridge, though the chairs on either side of the captain's chair look odd.
