The Breen

there is sooooooo much contradictory information on the breen

i would like people to pitch in and include everything we've heard about them

from when voyager tuvok (scoprion part 1) said the breen use organic ships
to when weyoun said their planet isnt a frozen wasteland

I think it was mentioned that they also use cloak.

I'm not sure what was said that was contradictory though.

The common knowledge, or at least the Federation intelligence, was that they live on a frozen world. That was contradicted by Weyoun who said that their planet had a very livable atmosphere.

I think Worf comments that no-one has ever seen what exactly is under those helmets and lived to tell of it, yet Kira (twice) and Dukat have managed to take out Breen guards and steal their uniform...

Maybe they just keep their eyes closed when they do it?

Just thought of this one: In Generations they're known to be using Type-3 disruptors along with the Klingons and Romulans, which are supposed to not have a stun setting.

I'm not sure if it ever comes up again though, so it might be useless information :p

When Work mentioned that no one has seen an Breen was it before the final few episodes when Maj Kira stole an Cold Suit, and how would Worf had known if Damar had actually seen one anyway. Good points though...LLAP

Resistance is Futile

One theory (never substantiated in canon) is that their bodies evaporate upon contact with above-freezing air.

^ That would get round the obvious problem of where you'd hide the bodies :p

Maybe it had something to do with the way the Breen were killed by Kira and Dukat- a low enough setting to preserve the uniforms while disintegrating the Breen? Maybe they're weird looking so they don't know what they're looking at...

Weyoun could have just been mocking Damar- he clearly put no effort into helping the two groups get along.

Why did Breen ships have normal humanoid climates then?

They might be another Vulcan offshoot that's just very shy.

Or they all look like Carrie Fisher, but are forced to hide because the copies of Return of the Jedi filtering in the galaxy have everyone wanting real, live slave Leias.

IIR, we only saw a portion of a Breen ship where prisoners were kept, not the bridge, crew quarters or other stations which would only be inhabited by Breen.

Weyoun seemed to indicate that the Breen put out contradictory information about themselves because they don't want people to really know anything about them.

They're really not a trustworthy species - the ROMULANS specifically say not to turn your back on a Breen.

Whatever the exact nature of the Breen, we probably have to assume that both Kira and Dukat would have it in their interests to keep that nature secret.

I mean, even if the Breen evaporated when uncorked, Kira would no doubt have reported this. She's enough of a Starfleet officer in spirit by the time of "Indiscretion" to mind such details, and to write complete reports. And Worf, while always prone to quote myths and legends, would have learned of the "volatile" nature of the Breen from those reports.

Now, what could bring Kira and Dukat together on something like that? On anything, really? The greater the secret, the more painful, the more worth keeping - the greater the temptation to use it against the opponent at some point.

It doesn't sound likely, then, that the Breen would evaporate, S:AaB style. Or that they would in fact be nothing but hollow suits. Those "secrets" would be too benign that Kira and Dukat would agree to form their own little omerta circle over the fact.

It might be that the Breen look more familiar than anybody suspects. Perhaps Kira and Dukat agree that they shouldn't endanger or embarrass the species or group that is hiding behind those suits, because both feel protective about that species or group - but that would be a wonderful way for Kira to blackmail Dukat and vice versa, and thus wouldn't ensure silence but would in fact goad revelation. It would be more natural for both to agree that the people or phenomena behind the suits are too frightening to be revealed to the world. And since neither Kira nor Dukat is known to fear much (apart from loss of face), the secret may be frightening indeed.

I liken the Breen to arctic lichen.

Their starships have energy dampening weapons.

They are experts at cold storage.

Perhaps they are an evil offshoot of the Bolians? When I hear the name Breen I think of the sea. Perhaps they are a sponge-type lifeform from the very depths of the ocean that have to be kept cold, dark, and wet under a heavily pressurized suit?

Or it could be that the creatures they found in the suits were so boringly unremarkable that they didn't feel the need to mention it beyond a footnote in the report.

'Breen look like humans. Some forehead wrinkles. Clammy skin. End of report.'

Maybe they're so boring, they actually cause people just to give up living.

'Breen look like humans. Some forehead wrinkles. Clammy skin. Away team died of sudden catastrophic boredom. End of report.'

Now that invention for keeping your cells excited in In The Cards makes a little more sense.

Might be that the Breen are expert telepaths with special competence for making people forget. A self-defense reaction of some sort, perhaps: "Move on, enemy, there's nothing to see here!". At the moment of death, this reaction would go to overdrive, suppressing the memorizing skills of the people witnessing the death. Kira would just wake up a few moments later and go all "Huh? Why am I in this silly and smelly suit? I must have had a reason... Oh, yeah, I had this plan. And then something happened. But who cares? For some reason, I don't...".

All we've ever seen of the Breen are of there military personnel, what do you think Breen civilian life and society might be like? Do you think all Breen are taught to despise all non-Breen and any refrain from making contact at all?

They're probably a very militaristic race like the Jarada... or the Cardassians. Pity Weyoun didn't mention anything... but he found them very secretive too... so they're probably a bit isolationist. Given their ships that may be biological, they're probably quite scientific. I'd also say given the "algae paste" food there is a lot of ocean on their worlds. They don't seem very creative, everything seems functional.
