The Borg have already been in the Bad Robot approved Starfleet Academy novels set during the three year gap in Trek XI. While Trek fans might be sick of the Borg, they are well-known villain among non-fans.

You make the tenuous assumption that "non-Trek fans" are the ones reading those novels.

I make no such assumption. I simply point out the Borg have been in the novels to those above me saying the Borg have no place in the Abramsverse, when clearly Orci has no problem with them there otherwise he wouldn't have signed his approval on the books. I then move on in response to others in the thread saying they are sick of the Borg that the Borg are recognizable and identifiable among non-fans, thereby making them a logical choice for the next movie, another part of Trek lore to introduce to the newbies.

The problem with that is, it won't keep being just one Borg. It only takes one drone to start a whole new collective.
