Apologies if this has already been posted...

Just pre-ordered this. This is one of my favorite shows of all time!

^^It was indeed shot on film before a studio audience, I believe, and unfortunately Shout Factory might not have been able to get great prints for the episodes; Fox didn't seem to care enough to make great new prints for it when they released it on DVD themselves in the past (the reason why present day TV shows are automatically put on DVD is due to them being shot in the current DV and HDTV formats with equipment like the RED camera, making them easier to put on DVD compared to shows shot on film or analog video systems.)

Shout! got their prints from Fox, so don't expect any difference from the way these shows have looked on DVD before. I think the array of bonus features is pretty impressive, though.

(Full disclosure: I work at Shout! Factory as of very recently and would be remiss in my duties if I didn't point out that the set is shipping early -- i.e. now -- if you order it straight from the Shout website).

See, if it was film, and that film looked good, I was wondering why no blu-ray option.

Hell, if the film is good, why bother with DVD at all any more.

Striking new transfers is expensive. You would need to do that for a Blu-ray version.

I'm more excited that "Newhart" is actually coming out now!

I've already ordered season 3 and season 4 now has a release date!

Hey, an insider! I'll be immeasurably grateful for any progress you can make toward a St. Elsewhere box set! ;)

Paramount is doing this for I Love Lucy, The Andy Griffith Show, and IIRC, Hawaii Five-O (original series). Twilight Zone and The Dick Van Dyke Show are also getting Blu-Ray sets, complete with new transfers for the Blu-Ray DVD's, as is Little House On The Prairie.

All in all, it looks like classic TV's coming to Blu-Ray in a big way.

To be fair, those shows are more valuable catalog titles than The Bob Newhart Show. As evidenced by the fact that Fox couldn't even finish releasing the series on DVD.

This is fantastic news. Bob Newhart is my favorite comedian and I love The Bob Newhart Show. And those are some mighty fine extras. :bolian:
