the biggest controversies of Trek

The Borg appearing on Enterprise. I remember the day the first rumours of that were released the Enterprise forum here literally exploded in rage.

Yep, them and the Ferengi.

In retrospect...

Ferengi on ENT: Bad idea.

Borg on ENT: Good idea (because they did it only once and it fit in nicely with "First Contact").

I agree, although I also agree that, at the time, there was a huge board controversy about the Borg.

Yeah, I kind of regret not being around here for some of the other controversial moments.

It would have made for some interesting discussion, and I so rarely get to talk about Star Trek outside of this forum.

- That Kirk and Uhura kiss shouldn't be a problem if it had been done naturally. The fact that they had to kiss because they were forced is what bugs me about it. I know, it's partially because of social norms at the time, but I find the fact that two people of different races had to be forced under mind control in order to kiss more offensive than the simple reality of an interracial kiss.

- I'm sure all the deaths are controversial, except Spock's. Star Trek has a really bad record when it comes to executing major character deaths in a dramatically effective manner. Tasha, Kirk, Data, David Marcus/Kirk, Dax, and the guy who died on the last episode of Enterprise (forgot his name) all had lame, cheap deaths.

- The adjustment of the Borg Collective structure for "Star Trek: First Contact" with the addition of the Borg Queen seems to be a huge controversy here, although I don't think it should be. I thought it was a necessary alteration in order to make them effective big screen villains and the Borg Queen added a lot of juice to the movie.
Charles "Trip" Tucker III. :p

The Kirk/Uhura kiss was the first interracial kiss on television. :)
That is a Star Trek legend. Sammy Davis Jr kissed Nancy Sinatra on TV a year before without being forced by aliens to do it.

Funny thing is, it WASN'T the first interracial kiss on TV, just American TV. A british soap opera beat them by quite a bit, the escapes me at the moment...

I remember going a bit mental when it was announced the Borg would be on ENT. What annoyed me was the principle of the thing rather than a canon violation.
The concept that the show hadn't even been on for two years yet, and already they were having to resort to using the Borg for story ideas. A race once brilliant, but ruined by their overuse in VOY.

But actually when the episode aired I rather liked it, and watching it again the other week it's a major highlight of Season 2, and apart from the silly Phlox-cures-himself-of-assimilation thing, a terrefic episode

But how can you accept what short work the crew of Enterprise makes of the Borg when TWO HUNDRED YEARS LATER in "Star Trek: The Next Generation", their weapons were so temporarily effective before being rendered useless due to adaptation? The Enterprise crew kicked Borg ass. I couldn't believe it. Here's a crew that is PRIMITIVE compared to the TNG crew, and they're able to destroy that crew's most threatening adversary with ease? The TNG crew could only avoid being slaughtered by the Borg because Q bailed their asses out so they could run away.

Plausibly, the Enterprise crew should only have been able to overcome the Borg by some narrow escape or some creative tactic to outsmart them, not prevail in one on one combat. This episode almost turned me off watching Enterprise for good (the only other episodes I saw were the "In a Mirror Darkly" ones, which almost made up for its awfulness). I still can't bring myself to watch any more for fear that the only reason I liked the ones I liked was because they were so completely different from the regular episodes. I can't watch a regular Enterprise episode after how awful this one was.

Goes to to show what pussies the 24th Century crews are. Back in the 22nd they had gumption and smarts!!!!! Dagnabbit. (spits)

In TNG, the Borg always came with one of their powerful cubes which are several times larger than a Galaxy-class starship. In ENT, three Borg drones had only assimilated a 22nd century Earth transport ship. That the Borg on ENT were considerably weaker wasn't that implausible to me.

Actually, one of the things I liked about "Regeneration" was that the Borg were constantly modifying and improving their ship so that a point could have been reached where the NX-01 is actually overpowered by the Borg. It was a race against time.

Exactly.

It was also a great example of Dramatic Irony as we, the audience, knew what was going to happen if the Born hung around long enough to keep improving, but the NX-01 crew had no idea what to expect.

There's always a controversy when something is produced that supposedly goes against everything that came before. So I'd say the biggest controversies in the history of Trek are:

1) Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1978/79)

2) Star Trek: The Next Generation (1986/87)

3) Enterprise (2000/01)

4) Star Trek XI (2008/09)

You could even say that there are cycles of controversy. ;)

Pretty much a lot of what ENT did, them encountering the Romulans with a cloaking device before TOS, Borg on ENT and the Ferengi and ENT.

I think the Kirk/Uhuru kiss stirred up some back in the 60's (a bit before my time) the whole TNG beginning (many old Trek stars refused to even watch the show at first) that was sorta a mess in the late 80's.

Vons
