the best BUMPY

The modern treks sure had their share of BUMBY HEADED aliens. And I'll give the make-up department their just-due, because, for the most part, they did a great job.

What was your favorite bumpy headed alien or, in a broad scope, modern TREk alien make-up job? I always like the Cardassians and the Jem-Hedar. I did not like the modern Vulcan/Romulan.

And is it possible that the large alien who had genitals on his knees (Kirk kicked them in TREK 6) was a Jem-Hedar? Sure looks like one in retrospect..

I think the Cardassians were a very good makeup job, as were the Hirogen, modern-era Tellarites, Benzites, Ferengi, Bolians, Voth and Xindi races.

I agree on all of those, especially the Hirgoen. if ONLY the writing had been as consistant as the make-up. I really liked the first couple episodes with the Hirogen, but in good Berman/Braga style, they just became another "trekkie" alien race.

The weirder looking the better. The Cardassians were very good and the Jem'Hadar were excellent, and both of those had a make-up job that was more than just a bumpy forehead. I liked the Bajorans, but the nose ridges were just such a tiny concession to alienness - an alien should stand out at 100 metres!

Cardassians have the best actual design, but I'll give the devil his due and say that the ENT-era Andorians were the greatest technical achievement.

It's unfortunate that they bumped up their heads, though, because, as SF Debris said, they're blue, white-haired, and they have antennae--they're alien enough.

Jemmies get honorable mention for great design, but I kind of wish they hadn't had hair. It's distracting, somehow.

I really do love them all. But if i remember correctly, i was completely in love with (and amazed by) the Xindi makeup.

I liked the Hirogen and the Hierarchy guys looked like potatoes :D

 In the novella "Places of Exile", a character indeed refers to them as "the Potato People".

I always thought the Hierarchy guys looked just like the Sontarans from Dr. Who.

I thought they were a cool race though. And that is one of my favorite VOYAGER episodes. I kind of thought they looked like STAR TREK versions of the aliens at the start of Stargate; the tire people.

Cardassians without any doubt. They didn't quite get it right on the first try (see TNG "The Wounded") but the makeup job and uniforms they came up after that were great. The heavy makeup manages to make them look reasonably 'alien' -as opposed to having just spots or a ridged nose or pointy ears - while at the same time making them strangely attractive. The scales and ridges and overall 'reptilian' look add a certain air of danger and power and snake-like slyness, which works well within the context of their role in Trek.

:techman: That's exactly what I would say. Great evaluation, thank you. :)

I, of course, am in compete agreement with the both of you.;)

Me three.

And we Cardassians LOVE to operate in threes. ;)

And agreed that the uniforms in "The Wounded" were bad--but the makeup itself, for a first try that they weren't intending to reuse at that point, really wasn't bad.

There were a lot of good ones.
The Cardassians were a masterpiece, as were the Jem H'Dar (sp?).
I agree with the earlier post about going too far with the Andorians. If they had stopped with the moving antennae, they would have been perfect.
I also really liked the Benzites. It's too bad we didn't see much more of them, other than a couple brief appearances.

One great thing about the Benzites was that they broke gender stereotypes without having to be in-your-face about it. The female Benzite was true to the species design, without someone deciding her facial features had to conform to "human model" standards. I liked that, personally, because you focus on the character DOING HER JOB, and on the cool species design.

Good points, and I had forgotten about the Benzites. They were well done...

I must make an honorable mention to a TOS bumpy..perhaps the template to all Bumpys..the Talosians!! Still creepy to this very day..
