The Beaver

The distributor has actually moved up/widened the film's distribution recently, after audience polling told them that Gibson's presence seemingly wasn't a drag on the film's prospects, surprisingly enough.

Surprisingly? Most normal people simply don't give a fuck about behind the scenes/yellow press bullshittery and are simply able to enjoy a movie.

I feel sorry for those people who can't leave their political and personal grudges behind when they watch a movie. It's always about "oh now that I know the actor/director/writer is a loser I can't stand his movies anymore" or "this leftwing/rightwing propaganda ruined the movie for me". Well, it's really only your loss, because if it's good, it will be successful regardless.

There's a difference between just normal all rants and "hate" coming out of an actor and then there's Gibson out-right bile.

Your problem. As I already said.

Sorry if I don't so easily forgive a man for spouting off hate towards a group of 15 million people world-wide who've already suffered painful hate and hardships through the decades.

I love Gibson's work, and will get around to seeing this I hope. I couldn't care less about his issues lately. As far as I'm concerned It's his own damn business, and has nothing to do with movies. Mel Gibson is a very talented and entertaining Performer.

You don't give a fuck that Gibson spouts off hate towards an entite group of people?
Oh, I give a fuck about those things. But I don't let it spoil absolutely everything that has absolutely anything to do with him.

In the same vein:

Adam Baldwin's close-minded homophobia hasn't caused me to throw out my "Firefly" box set or kept me from enjoying "Chuck" every week.

The fact that O.J. Simpson is most likely a wife murdering bastard doesn't magically make the old "Naked Gun" movies any less funny.

I don't let the strong possibility that Michael Jackson was maybe a bit too pervy around kids cloud my judgment that the song and video of "Thriller" still kicks some serious ass.

So why should a let the fact that Mel reflexively emulates his antisemitic ass of a father every time he drinks too much, keep me from enjoying the work he does/did while sane and sober?

His religious fanaticism doesn't make the "Mad Max" films any less thrilling. His alcoholism doesn't remotely impact the on-screen chemistry he had with Danny Glover in the "Lethal Weapon" films. His shitty relationships with women don't make the tale of William Wallace any less awesome in "Braveheart".

Seems pretty simple to me.

Likewise, the possibility that Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, aka Lewis Carroll, may have liked little girls a bit too much doesn’t diminish my enjoyment of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. In the same vein, the fact that certain notable people harbored a deep-seated hatred of Jews doesn’t prevent me from appreciating the music of Wagner or driving a car that bears Henry Ford’s name.

Not to forget about Roman Polanski, who drugged and ass-raped a little girl and runs away from the prosecution. Still like his movies.

Yep. You can like someone's body of work and still not like their personal views, and as long as they don't use their body of work to promote said views, I've no issue with it.

I actually really like the concept behind this movie. I won't pay to see it, but I like the concept and if the execution is good, wish it well.

That reminds me of something that happened when I was on strike, about twelve years ago.

We were picketing, and I was picket captain. A motorist rolled down his window and started berating me, about how he used to support us, but didn't any more, because our picket lines were disrupting everything so much.

"Really?" I asked. "So, what were you doing for us, when you supported us?"

He spluttered angrily, and rolled his window back up. :)

As a psychologist don't you think that a person with clinical depression, apparently, beginning to exhibit multiple-personality-disorder or whatever disorder would cause them to behave in this manner is a regression in mental health and not an improvement or is all that "healthy"?

Ummm... Sorry Trekker, but I think you've probably got it backwards.

IIRC the Gibson-character's use of the puppet isn't an affectation of a mental illness, but a treatment for one. I'm pretty sure he's instructed by his doctor to confront aspects of his personality that he's repressed and sublimated, by letting those aspects speak through the puppet.

Using puppets this way in child therapy is already pretty common. I'd imagine that it's probably found its way into adult therapy as well.

I heard about this months before Gibson's latest implosion and I was really intrigued by the premise. I'll still probably check it out.

Yeah, Gibson may personally be a horrible human being but I don't really care. Fortunately I don't have to know him personally. I am, however, a moviegoer who likes good movies. I can see those without condoning or caring about what he's doing in his personal life. He's an actor. He gets paid to pretend he's other people for my amusement. There's an excellent chance that between his movies, interviews and his Crazy Tapes that I have no fucking idea who Mel Gibson actually is.

And I don't care. Entertain me. Dance, monkey. That goes for every movie actor I don't know personally. Which is all of them.

That, too. The movie was done and finished long ago.

Excellent chance? Excellent certainty!

You must have gleamed something in the previews I didn't. It seemed to me he finds the puppet in the trash, goes off the deep end, and then starts talking through it to himself. Maybe I need to watch the trailer again but I see no indication of a professional being involved at any point in the process. If it was a doctor-required "treatment" I somehow doubt that his family would have such a severe reaction.

Somehow I'm not exactly chomping at the bit to see Mel Gibson talk through a hand puppet.

His politics are a huge problem for me, and I thought "The Passion" was an incredibly tacky idea for a movie (and yet was a huge hit, go figure). I don't feel like he needs any more of my money at this point.

It was mentioned specifically in the trailer that it's a prescribed therapeutic tool. I can't be arsed to watch it again and tell you the exact moment, but it's there if you look. I distinctly remember that bit.
