The Battlestar Galacticafication of Stargate has began!

And, no, I don't consider humanity giving up all of its technology and scattering to the four winds to revert back to barbarism a heartening end to the series.

That wasn't exactly the point, as I've argued extensively over in the BSG forum.

Plus, the robot montage at the very end — 150,000 years after Galactica arrived on our Earth — was somewhat corny.

I like the coda, but the robot montage wasn't as effective as it could have been. I think it narrows the focus of the end to a point about artificial intelligence, when the message of the series was much wider in focus.

Say what you will about the Stargate franchise, but as long as they give at least a token explanation when they bring dead characters back to life, the sex scenes aren't between actors older than my grandparents, and the majority of the characters remain the species they were introduced as, Stargate will still be a step above Battlestar Galactica.

No, they don't.

BSG was great for its first two seasons. Once RD Moore-Ron got wind of his own praise and turned the show into his own indulgent new age pseudo-religious wankfest it all went to shit.

No, BSG is the only recent SF show I ACTUALLY stopped watching out of disgust for how badly it was going.

Never have I seen such potential shat away like last night's cheap curry.

Exactly so. These writers just aren't up to creating an adult-oriented drama, no matter how determined they may be.

This premise is salvagable and could actually be intriguing, if they sack the writing staff and go get people who've actually established themselves as being able to write interesting characters in somewhat unpredictable, messy situations.

It may well be that Stargate has the same franchise problems that Trek eventually did - a conflict between the perceived need for top-down control to maintain a certain brand consistency, and any spontaneity and cleverness in the story telling.

Fair enough, then: in the last ten years Stargate has become the very definition of so-so, lightweight fantasy storytelling on basic cable. It's generic, forgettable, and goes through one's consciousness like crap through a goose. The Stargate franchise is the Cheez Whiz of televised science fiction.

It should be noted that Cheez Whiz is a very successful product.

Nobody is going to sack the writing staff, unfortunately. Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper run the writing staff, and the franchise. Somehow the franchise continues to bring money in to MGM, and as long as that continues to happen, Wright and Cooper are answerable to no one.

True, but we know that DVD sales are down (delaying both the announced third Stargate SG-1 DVD movie and the first Stargate Atlantis movie, and limiting the appearance of Stargate Atlantis on Blu-Ray to only a three-episode "Best Of" release) and that the ratings of the franchise are down (We'll see how long these "best ratings of Stargate in five years!" truly last). Those aren't indicators of a product with the longevity or cultural impact of Cheez Whiz.

Not so much guilt as a little bit of self-conscious self-mockery. It's kind of like "McDonalds" fast food restaurants - we've labeled them the very definition of mediocrity at the same time that we've made them the biggest restaurant franchise in the world.

SG1 was a well done Star Trek ripoff. This is a well done BSG ripoff. If nothing else, it shows the writers have good taste in Sci Fi shows.

SG:U is Too dark; Too depressing; Too gritty; Too sexual; Too serious; Too repetitive; Too tense; Too contrived; Too predictable; Badly cast; and Badly written (seriously, you're on a ship that doesn't work but you have 5 Ancient stones...how's about you use them to connect with 5 brilliant scientists that can fix the G-Damn ship instead of a sulking Lou Diamond Phillips in his most depressing role ever?)

I for one liked SG:1 and SG:A because they offered a campy escape from my dark, depressing, repetitive life that I could watch with my children without explaining what young adults might do when faced with mortality.

This show makes me wanna start cutting like the young kids do these days.

I couldn't stomach so much as the commercials for NuBSG, and if this show continues it's present path my DVR will find something else to record.


The only bright spot in the entire show was killing off Christopher McDonald. I think he should guest star on a different TV series every week and be killed off at the end of the episode. It could be a network "meme".

I don't eat Cheese Whiz. The reason so much is used is because an authentic Philly Cheesesteak made in Philly uses Cheese Whiz. You might remember during the John Kerry campaign when he went to Philly and had a cheesesteak. He ordered swiss on his-major Faux pas.
