The Basics of Humanity

K-Star

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
So, I came up with an idea for a new fic. Data becomes human and must learn to cope with it. No, this is NOT my challenge entry. In fact, I'm not sure I'll be participating in this one, as I can't expand my idea for it into a full story. I do think this first chapter has been written VERY well, though. And I still have plans to continue my other fic as well, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Hypothetical bonus points to anyone who can pick up on any references or influences used in this story!

So, here's the first chapter.

Chapter 1: Happy Birthday

Captain's log, stardate (Whatever. It's after "All Good Things" and before "Generations"): We've sent an away team down to planet Norcimo Theta to examine an extremely interesting piece of machinery. Legends tell of a machine built by androids that had been abandoned on the planet that was used to turn themselves into humanoid lifeforms. Eventually, they all died out, as they were no longer immortal.

The machine was huge. It took up a good deal of the large room they were standing in. Data and Geordi both had their tricorders out and were looking around the machine. There was an open platform in the middle of it all, where whoever was being transformed would stand, and Data's tricorder was picking up some interesting readings coming from inside. After a friendly "Be careful!" from Geordi, Data stepped on the platform and continued his scan.

But when Data entered the seemingly dormant machine, it started to activate. There was a loud hum as systems and lights kicked on.

"Data! Get out of there!" Geordi yelled.

Data tried to run, but was unable to lift his feet. "I cannot move!" he exclaimed over the noise of the machine, "Some kind of force is keeping me rooted to this spot!"

There were bright lights shining down on Data, and years upon years of dust formed clouds around him. A cylindrical wall came up from the platform and met with a "ceiling" above him, trapping him inside.

Riker was frantically trying to stop the machine using a rather promising looking panel but couldn't figure anything out. Besides, who knew what the risk was to Data if he stopped whatever was happening? Geordi rushed to the wall that had formed around Data (with little regard for his own safety) and started banging on it, calling out to his friend. He could not hear any noise from inside.

A few more flashes of light, and the noise and dust started to subside. Soon there was silence and minor hissing as the wall slowly came down. As the dust settled, Geordi could make out a figure lying face down on the platform. "Data?" he called out, slowly approaching the figure. He was confused. Normally his VISOR displayed an aura around Data, signifying that he was an artificial lifeform, but this aura was no longer visible.

Riker also approached. Taking a good look at the man on the platform, he muttered "Oh my God…" He turned him over so he lay face up. There was no mistaking it: The Starfleet uniform, facial features, and neat hairstyle (which had become slightly mussed) all indicated that this was indeed Data, only now…

He was… human.

His skin was no longer pale gold, but normal looking. Riker gently grabbed his shoulder and shook him slightly to see if he would wake up. Data stirred, and opened his eyes, which were now light blue instead of yellow.

"Urrrrg…" he groaned, "What happened?" He still sounded the same, but there was something in his tone of voice that suggested he was experiencing physical discomfort.

"If I could explain it I would," Geordi said.

"Why do I feel… pain?" Data asked, "I am not programmed to feel pain…"

"Must've hit the ground hard when you collapsed in there…" Geordi speculated, "Or maybe you're just sore from all those changes."

"What changes?" Data asked, "What has happened?" After a few seconds silence, he asked "Why is it taking so long for me to access my files?"

"My friend," Riker replied with a slight grin, patting Data on the shoulder, "I believe you have just achieved your lifelong goal."

Geordi and Riker helped Data to his feet, surprised at how much lighter he was now that he wasn't made of metal. As Data brushed the dust off his uniform, he noticed the color of his hands. Startled, he felt his face and hair. "How can this be?" he asked, "I am…"

"Human, like you've always dreamed of being," Riker finished, "And I must say it certainly looks good on you."

"Almost the spitting image of Dr. Noonien Soong when he was younger," Geordi remarked, recalling a picture he had seen of Data's creator, "Of course, you were built to look like him."

"This is incredible!" Data exclaimed, "It would appear the legends were true!"

"How do you feel?" Riker asked.

Data tried his best to describe how he felt physically at the moment. "Sore," he replied, "And cold."

"Do you remember anything from in there?" Geordi asked.

"I remember not being able to run away," Data said, "And the wall coming up, and the bright flashes of light, and for a moment I experienced an odd burning sensation throughout my body and… confusion. But then everything went black. And then I woke up and saw both of you kneeling over me."

Riker turned to Geordi. "Do you think there's a way to reverse the process?" he asked.

"Theoretically yeah," Geordi replied, "I've heard stories of another machine that turned humans into androids… But what's the rush? Data's always dreamed of being human, and now he is."

"You do realize, Data," Riker said, turning to Data as he spoke, "that now you won't be as strong or as fast or as quick-thinking as before, right?"

"All of my memories and knowledge are intact… I think," Data said with slight uncertainty, "It is simply taking me longer to access them."

Suddenly Riker's combadge went off. "Number One, we noticed a major power surge in the equipment down there earlier… Is everything alright?" Picard asked.

"I think so, sir," Riker replied, "In fact, we were just preparing to leave. Have the transporter chief beam the three of us to sickbay."

"Sickbay?" Picard repeated, "Are you sure you're alright down there?"

"I suggest you meet us there, Captain," Riker said, "This is going to take a lot of explaining, and you need to see this for yourself. Bring Counselor Troi with you."

After the comlink was closed, the away team was beamed to sickbay. As Beverly wandered to and fro around the room dealing with various equipment, she merely acknowledged that the three people who had just arrived were standing upright and none of them looked sick. "I don't get it, you three look fine…" she said, before turning around and taking a good look at Data. "Oh my God!" she exclaimed, quickly grabbing a tricorder and running over to scan him. "Data! You're human!"

"I know," Data replied, grinning.

"But how?"

"Seems like the former inhabitants of the planet were able to figure out how to turn androids into humans after all," Riker explained.

At this point Captain Picard entered, and stood in stunned silence when he saw the ex-android. "Data?" he gasped.

"Hello, Captain," Data replied cheerfully.

Counselor Troi was surprised as well. "I can sense emotions from you, Data!" she exclaimed, "It seems as though you are completely human after all! And rather handsome, I might add…"

"I'm going to have to run a bunch more scans and tests on you, Data," Beverly said, "Have a seat." She indicated a biobed, and Data got on it.

As she ran all the scans she announced all her findings. "He is completely human," she said, "and in excellent physical health. Biological age is exactly 34 years…"

"That is correct, in a way," Data explained, "I was activated by the crew of the Tripoli 34 years ago… today, in fact."

"This is the anniversary of your activation?" Geordi said, "Well, happy birthday, Data! In more ways than one, since it's also your first day as a human."

"What about DNA?" Riker asked, "I'm curious how a being with no genetic material could become human."

"He does have DNA now," Beverly replied, "And it indicates that he is the biological offspring of Dr. Noonien Soong and Julianna Tainer."

"Well he certainly bears a resemblance to his father," Deanna stated.

"How could that machine know who Data's creators were?" Picard asked.

"Perhaps it accessed my memories during the process," Data explained, "I do recall thinking of my 'parents' before I collapsed."

"You collapsed?" Picard repeated, finding that somewhat hard to believe, as in his eyes Data had always been near indestructible.

"The physical strain of the metamorphosis seems to have been a bit too much for him to handle," Geordi explained, "We found him lying face down on the platform when the dust cleared. When he woke up he said he was sore all over."

"Are you still sore?" Beverly asked Data.

"A little," he replied, though that was a bit of an understatement. Data of course had no clue how much pain humans were capable of enduring comfortably, but he figured since it wasn't completely debilitating it must not be that bad. Besides, he was too busy focusing on how awesome it was that he had become human to focus on how sore he was.

"Here," she said, grabbing a hypospray and applying it to Data's neck. Instant relief swept over him.

"Wow!" he exclaimed, "That is amazing! I feel much better now! Thank you, Doctor!"

"No problem," Beverly grinned, "Just take it easy for a bit."

"Well," Picard said, "Counselor Troi, Mr. Laforge, I want both of you to look after Data for the next couple of days while he learns to cope with being human. Until then, Data, you are temporarily relieved of duty. We need to be sure that your transformation won't have any negative effects on your job performance other than the inevitable lack of speed and strength."

"Aye sir," the three officers replied as Picard turned to leave.

"And Mr. Data?" Picard said, pausing briefly and turning back around.

"Yes Captain?" Data asked.

Picard gave him a warm smile. "Happy birthday," he said.

Comments welcome, in fact they're encouraged! More to come later. Might even throw in an OC or two.

Hmm. I'm afraid I'm not a fan of the "Verge of Improbable" type stories. That having been said, it is a fairly well written piece and you obviously though of the immediate ramifications of the change.

And so, Pinocchio becomes a real boy. It is a nice start and an intriguing premise for a Data centered story.

Warmest Wishes,
Whoa Nellie

I'm glad to see that y'all enjoy it. I plan to try and outline all the positives and negatives of being human through this fic, as Data experiences things he's never felt and does things he's never needed to do before! There's also going to be a rather interesting revelation at the end which almost throws canon out the window but what the hell? ;)

Chapter 2 is almost done. A bit more content to include and some final touches to add, and it'll be ready.

Also, what do you find so improbable, Mistral? I tried to make this as feasible as I could (within the realm of Star Trek, of course) without getting Q involved (that's the easy way, and there are TOO MANY "Q makes Data human" stories out there already). And as I completely suck at technobabble, there's no way I can get too detailed.

A BIT OF ESSENTIAL BACKGROUND FIRST: For those of y'all who haven't read "Saved from the Tubes," Lt. Eilsel Joroger is a character I made up. She is half Tauren, which is an alien species I sorta made up that is basically a blatant rip from World of Warcraft. Her father, Tahono, is Tauren. Her mother (whose name I haven't come up with yet) is human. She looks completely human, but is quite tall (only an inch shorter than Data, that's pretty tall for a girl) and strong (though not nearly as strong as Worf). Since the events of "Saved from the Tubes," she has developed a reputation as a gossip queen and has a really good friendship with both Data and Geordi. Want to see a picture of her? Chapter 2: A Day of Firsts

As Data left sickbay with Geordi and Deanna (it had taken a while, since Beverly wanted to make absolutely sure he was ok), his stomach growled. Of course, he didn't really know how to interpret this. He stopped walking as he felt this new sensation and held his hand to his stomach.

Geordi and Deanna noticed that Data had stopped and turned around. "What's wrong?" Geordi asked.

"My stomach," Data said, "It just… rumbled."

Deanna laughed softly. "That means you're hungry," she said, "Come on, let's go to Ten Forward and get something to eat."

They arrived at Ten Forward a few minutes later and sat down at a table. Most people either didn't notice or didn't recognize Data, since he blended in with the crowd much better now.

Guinan, however, definitely noticed, and she was the one who approached their table first.

"Hello, Geordi. Hello, Deanna," she said before turning to face Data. She took a good long look at him before she spoke again. "Well looky here! Pinocchio has become a real boy! Maybe now you'll have a sense of humor… Did Q have anything to do with this?" she asked.

"Q was not involved at all," Data replied, "There was an incident with the machine on Norcimo Theta…"

"Oh," Guinan interrupted, "That machine. I heard stories about it from my father. One of his father's friends built one of the androids involved in its construction. Never thought I'd get a chance to meet an android who had actually used it."

"You knew about this machine?" Geordi asked.

"Of course," Guinan replied.

"Why did you not tell me about it before?" Data asked.

"I had no clue it still worked," Guinan said, "So, what are you guys having?"

"Well I don't know about you guys, but I'm in the mood for some chocolate," Deanna said, "I'll have a chocolate sundae please."

Data thought for a moment. "I have never tried chocolate before," he said, "I believe I will have one as well."

"And for you, Geordi?" Guinan asked.

"Guess I'll have one too," Geordi replied.

Guinan left the table to go fill their orders, and came back with three chocolate sundaes. They each took one, thanked Guinan, and dug in.

"Oh wow!" Data exclaimed after taking his first bite, "This is amazing! I can see why you enjoy this so much, Counselor!" He started eating a little faster, and both Geordi and Deanna could see what was about to happen.

"Hey Data," Geordi warned, "You might wanna slow down a bit or you'll…"

"Ow!" Data moaned, putting a hand to his forehead.

"…get brain freeze," Geordi finished.

Deanna couldn't help but laugh at seeing Data so helpless. As Data sat there with his hand to his forehead, Deanna explained it to him. "See," she said, "When you eat ice cream, or anything cold for that matter, you need to take it slowly or you'll get a headache like the one you just had."

"I do not believe I will make that mistake again," Data said, rubbing his forehead.

"Good for you," Geordi chuckled, taking a bit too large of a bite of his own sundae. "Ow…" he muttered as he had his own brain freeze.

"Looks like you haven't fully learned that lesson yet either," Deanna said, giggling. "So, Data, do you have any plans as to what you want to do to celebrate your birthday?" she asked.

Data thought for a moment, "I have no plans now, nor did I have any before I was transformed," he replied. "I suppose it would be nice to have a party, but with such short notice organizing one would be nearly impossible. However, I am very content with the mere fact that I am human now. This makes it the best birthday I have ever had."

As Data was giving his explanation, Geordi noticed Lt. Eilsel Joroger walking in, and an idea popped into his head immediately. "Excuse me a moment," Geordi said, getting up from the table and walking over to Eilsel.

"I wonder why Geordi needed to speak to Lt. Joroger so urgently?" Data asked Deanna.

"I don't know," Deanna replied, "Maybe it's an engineering issue."

Data's hearing was still quite good, but not necessarily superior. And he had lost his ability to single out and focus on individual voices, meaning the general hubbub of Ten Forward was making it impossible to hear what Geordi was saying to Eilsel. He was quite intrigued, and even a little amused, by the fact that he could now actually become distracted, but kept watching Geordi and Eilsel. Finally, he could see Eilsel nod quite eagerly at whatever Geordi had just said, and she departed quickly.

Geordi rejoined Data and Deanna at their table. "Sorry bout that," he said, sitting down.

"May I ask what you two were talking about?" Data asked.

"You'll see," Geordi smirked, glancing over at Deanna. He would need to talk to her about his idea privately.

A few minutes later, Data felt pressure below his stomach, which he was able to correctly interpret as needing to go to the bathroom. He assured Deanna and Geordi he would not need help ("Good, because you're not getting any help on this one!" Geordi had said), and left the table. While Data was away, Geordi explained his plan to Deanna.

Data returned quite a while later, after having been stopped on the way back by Lt. Barclay, who proceeded to ask Data a lot of questions about what it was like to become a human after having been an android for so many years. Data had been only too happy to oblige, as he was still quite talkative. Deanna then said she needed to go do something (she wasn't very specific), and left Data and Geordi at the table. They proceeded to talk to each other for a while, discussing the various things Data would like to try doing now that he was human. When Data mentioned testing how much his creativity could've possibly improved now that he had a human perspective on things, Geordi suggested they both go to Data's quarters so Data could try painting or playing his violin.

So they left Ten Forward and arrived at Data's quarters a few minutes later. And what Data saw when the door opened made him jump.

"SURPRISE!"

All his friends, minus Geordi because he was standing next to Data, were inside. They all had presents and there was a birthday cake on the table.

"I do not understand," Data said, turning to Geordi, "You and Counselor Troi were the only two people I mentioned the idea of having a party to…"

"I know," Geordi said, smiling, "And with the help of Lt. Joroger, I was able to get everyone together."

"Remember, I am the queen of gossip around here. And when I heard who this was for, I was only too happy to provide my news-spreading services," Eilsel grinned, walking over to Data and putting a party hat on his head, before giving him a quick, friendly kiss on the cheek. "Wow, never thought I'd see you, of all people, blushing like that!"

She was right. Data's face was bright red. But he was smiling.

The party was a total success. Data had his second real laugh (the first one having been when Q had granted him a brief moment of laughter for saving him from the Calamarain) when Eilsel told a hilarious joke, and actually received laughs from others when he successfully told his first joke, from a joke book that Eilsel had given him. Picard and Riker both gave Data books as well, one full of Shakespeare, the other about how to get a girl. Worf gave Data a Bat'leth, which Data actually struggled to hold properly, since his strength and balance had been significantly diminished. He promised himself he would work out on a regular basis to either increase or maintain what strength he had. Deanna and Beverly had both given Data some new outfits and some pajamas, because now that he could feel discomfort and would actually require time to relax and sleep, he would obviously not want to be wearing his uniform all the time. Geordi hadn't had the time to get Data anything, and felt horrible about it, but Data considered the fact that he came up with the idea for the party in the first place to be an excellent gift.

Eventually everyone had to go, but Deanna and Geordi remained behind, partially because they had no idea how Data would react when he became tired for the first time. They talked for another hour or so before they noticed Data was starting to doze off in his chair.

"Hey! Data!" Geordi whispered loudly, tapping a sleeping Data on the shoulder, which made him jerk awake, "I think it's time for you to go to bed."

Data yawned (for real), and nodded in agreement to Geordi's statement.

"Come on," Deanna said, helping Data get up, "Go change into your pajamas and I'll tuck you in."

"That is not necessary, Counselor," Data said, "But the gesture is appreciated." He got up and changed behind a wall, then walked over to his bed and got in. "So this is what it feels like to be fatigued," he said.

"Get used to it," Geordi chuckled, "You'll be feeling this every night for the rest of your life."

"Comfortable?" Deanna asked as she helped pull up the covers.

"Yes," Data replied as he settled in, his eyes half closed, "Very much so."

"Good night, Data," she said, "Who knows? Perhaps with emotions your dreams will be even better."

"I hope so," Data yawned, closing his eyes, "Good night, Counselor. Good night, Geordi."

"Good night," Geordi said. He ordered the computer to dim the lights, and both he and Deanna left.

About three hours later, as she was about to get ready for bed herself, Deanna received an emergency call on her combadge.

"Data to Counselor Troi," said a shaky voice on the other end.

"Troi here," she replied, tapping her badge, "What's wrong, Data?"

"I am scared," the voice sobbed, "Such horrible images…"

"You must have had a nightmare," Deanna explained. She knew this was going to take more than just a discussion over a comlink, considering Data had never experienced anything like this before. "I'll be right over, just try to calm down."

Moments later, she entered Data's quarters. The lights were still dimmed, but Data sat upright in his bed, crying into his hands.

"What happened?" Deanna asked, walking over and sitting next to Data on the bed.

"The ship," he explained through heavy sobs, "it was taken over by the Borg… they assimilated the Captain again… and then… they killed Geordi… and they tortured Eilsel… and I was forced to watch it all before they started to assimilate me."

Deanna pulled Data into a comforting embrace, patting him on the back with one hand and stroking his hair with the other. Data returned the hug and continued crying into her shoulder, shaking all over. "Shh, it's alright," she said softly, "The Borg are nowhere near this sector, everything's fine. Everyone's alright. It was just a bad dream."

"If dreams can be this horrible," Data sobbed, "I do not wish to ever sleep again."

"You need to sleep," Deanna said, "It's all part of being human. Everyone has nightmares, and you have to remember that it's just a dream. And not all dreams are bad, in fact some can be absolutely wonderful."

"Why have nightmares at all, then?" Data asked.

"That's something you can't help," Deanna explained, "You remember how your dreams were as an android, right? They made no sense to you and had no relevant meaning. As a human with emotions, your thoughts are more random and harder to control. And some of these dreams may have meaning. The dream you described tells me you are afraid of losing your friends."

"I have never been afraid before," Data cried, "And I do not like it at all."

"It's something you're going to have to learn to live with, Data," Deanna said, patting Data on the shoulder, "Everyone is afraid of something, even Captain Picard."

Data continued crying into Deanna's shoulder for about a minute or so, though he was much quieter. Deanna continued to hold him close during this time, rubbing his back and stroking his hair like before. It was very much like comforting a small, scared child, which is basically what Data was at the moment, even though he was physically an adult. Eventually, the tears subsided.

"Do you feel better now?" she asked.

"I think so," Data replied quietly.

"You need to go back to sleep now," Deanna said, letting go of Data. Data lay back down and Deanna tucked him in.

"I'm sorry if I bothered you, Counselor," Data apologized.

"It's not a problem, Data," Deanna replied, "To be honest, I thought something like this would happen eventually. I just didn't expect it to be so soon. Good night, Data."

"Good night, Counselor," Data yawned, and he fell asleep once again as Deanna left the room.

-----

Yes, I'm aware I've already written a drabble involving a surprise party for Data, but I thought it would work so well here. In fact, in future chapters y'all might notice a few of my other ideas being recycled somewhat.

Comments please. Be nice! :p

We are the sum of our experiences. Data is a mature being with a wealth of adult decisions and is not entirely unfamiliar with fear or dread(remember him stalking Borg with Picard in First Contact?) Yet he wakes up sobbing(and acting) like a little boy. Like I said, a touch improbable. Still fun reading-it just requires a more thorough suspension of belief.

Keep in mind, this is pre-Generations. He's NEVER had emotions before (exept the anger Lore gave him in Descent). And remember during Generations, when he was scared and Geordi got kidnapped because Data was frozen with fear and therefore couldn't go after Soran? That was his first real canon experience with fear, and he couldn't overcome it and do what was neccessary.

And with most of my fanfics, you REALLY have to suspend belief/disbelief (whatever the phrase is... I've always heard "suspend disbelief.")
