The Bantha in the room--Leia's role in Episode IX

Well, thats sad. I would rather have liked to see her as cgi than being recast or written out of Episode IX.

Assuming she survived Episode VIII originally. We don't know. We may never really know depending on the behind the scenes interviews.

Come to think of it, we still don't even have a title for the movie that is coming out in less than a year. Though that is probably so Rogue One can get all the thunder it can, before Episode VIII sweeps in. There might even be stuff about the Han Solo movie late this year as Episode VIII will have all the hype it needs, while Rogue One and the Han Solo film will need all they can get.

Little Rogue One and its paltry billion dollar gross. I would be rather surprised if VIII breaks 1.5 to be honest. Closer to 1 seems like the realistic expectation going forward for the franchise as a whole. Maybe a little less if the storytelling and overall quality follows R1's lead.

I heard the news. Thank goodness. The idea of watching a CGI Carrie Fisher in "Rogue One" was bad enough. But in "Episode IX", which should be due out in less than three years? No, I don't think so.

Glad they've ruled out replacing Fisher with a digital double. That served it's purpose in 'Rogue One' just fine since there was literally no other way to achieve that image, but to have it done to replace her, even for a little bit in Episode 8 or 9? That would have just felt wrong to me.
Best case scenario: they do the best they can with the footage they already have, which really is why typically happens on the odd occasion an actor has passed mid-production. (Oliver Reed leaps to mind.)

I'd say they won't start really cranking up the hype machine for Episode VIII until Celebration in April. That's when we'll likely get the first teaser and the title, if not then just the title and the teaser come May 4th. It's also about when the Rogue One Bluray will probably go on sale so there's that too.

There are two key scenes for General Leia Organa that are spread between Star Wars 8 and Star Wars 9. The first of which features a reunion between Leia and her twin brother Luke Skywalker. This scene, or at least part of it, was already shot. The second key scene involves Leia coming face to face with Kylo Ren. If a CG stand-in for Leia is not an option, some or all of Leia's scenes may be cut from Star Wars 8 so that the story can continue in Star Wars 9. There is heavily speculation that the reunion between Luke and Leia comes in the final moments of Star Wars 8, with that being the final scene. If that is the case, and Leia doesn't return via Motion Capture, this moment will most likely be excised from the movie for the simple fact that they won't be able to continue it in the next chapter.
I'd like the spreading what they've got of Leia over the next two films option. There would obviously need to be rewrites and reshoots for episode eight to save material to carry over to episode nine, and some stand-in use to plug a few gaps, but we'd have a real Carrie in both movies, and finish off her arc properly.

Whether they'll kill off the character or write her out somehow, they'll have to finish it so that her absence from any later films makes sense.

Maybe they'll do something sort of like with Oliver Reed in Gladiator. In the original script, he was supposed to live to the end (with hijm burying the figurines I think, instead of Juba) but he died during production, so things were re-edited so he dies in the earlier scene in the barracks. If you watch closely, the footage of Reed's close-up (It's a double in all the other shots) is actually from earlier in the film, when he's telling Maximus about "shadows and dust". It actually works pretty well....

Granted, all of episode 8's Leia stuff is filmed, but if there's a scene in the film as it is now hinting at her greater involvement in episode 8, they might re-edit the footage somehow so she dies early.

Recasting would be just as jarring as a CGI version. Having a new Leia at the last second, after forty plus years and five films, would be a constant distraction.

I also vote for the "write her out organically." There's still time to tweak the ending of Episode 8. Have the character die at the end of that film or the beginning of 9. Use what footage exists, write around it. There's plenty of time to overhaul Episode 9 to accommodate.

If done properly, the loss of the character of Leia could enhance the drama. It doesn't have to detract from it.

I'm happy that they aren't going CGI for Leia in 9; however, I only can hope they figure out a strong way for the character to go and hopefully not completely off screen.

Maybe they could move the Kylo portion to 9 and have her captured by the First Order. His final descent to the Dark Side could be killing Leia, or Snoke kills her and that act restores Ben.

A possibility might be to have Billie Lourd's character (Lieutenant Kaydel Connix) suddenly revealed as a secret daughter of Han & Leia, Ren's sister, who'd been hiding in plain view. (Wouldn't be the first time!) That'd allow her to take up the lion's share of whatever Leia was supposed to do in IX, including an apparently-planned confrontation with Ren; either Mon Mothma, Ackbar or one of the other Resistance leaders could handle the rest.

I actually really love that idea and would love to see it happen - along with Rey being Luke's daughter - in Episode 8 and 9. This way, Luke gets a kid, Leia gets a good kid and the Skywalker bloodline continues!

If Rey isn't a Skywalker, then I have to wonder if we might not end the trilogy with her and a redeemed Ben becoming a couple. That way we can have the Skywalker family continue and we don't introduce a random secret kid or sibling to do it.

Honestly, I don't really want Ben to be redeemed. We already had the turns to the Dark Side and (last minute) redemption thing with Anakin, I say for Ben have him completely unrepentant.

How about having him redeemed, but have to deal with the issues of guilt, culpability and punishment for all the awful things he did while under Dark Side influence, instead of having him conveniently die moments later a la Vader?

Yes.

Because society demands violent retribution and vengeance. Villains must be killed by the hero instead of being arrested and tried, and redemption gives no satisfaction and closure.

One, I couldn't care less about Kylo Ren's redemption. The character does nothing for me. And two, the idea of Rey and Ren as a couple makes me ill.

Redeeming Kylo Ren is the worst idea in the long, sad history of bad Star Wars ideas.

... Okay, maybe not that bad, but Lord, it isn't good.
Redemption is huge part of the Star Wars story, and I think that the idea @Kor posted about seeing Ben having to deal with all of the shit he did as Ren would be a lot more interesting than just killing him off. We've seen that in the Legacy books, and comics, but as far as I know they haven't tackled it in the new canon yet.

What like having him become like an Ulic Qel-Droma?

"She's owned by them."

What the fuck?! What a weird thing to say about your late sister. I realize he probably meant Leia but it still doesn't sound good.

I'm curious to see how they will work in existing footage for a film that hasn't begun principal photography. I worry it's going to feel awkward, either for flow reasons or because the viewer can feel Fisher's absence.
