The Autobiography of Mr. Spock by... Una McCormack?

She's also written some Garak/Bashir fanfic, just search A03 for her name.

EDIT: Just tried it an no luck. I downloaded them years ago perhaps they've been taken down?

This will be one of those times where I'm really hoping for discontinuity between books.

In the Kirk autobio, Goodman wrote Star Trek 5 off completely as never actually having happened, which I personally found to be a very poor decision.

I'm hoping Una rectifies that by delving into the Spock/Sybok dynamic.
I agree with this. I understand its a bit of a laugh writing off that movie like that, but I have fun watching The Final Frontier. And I think Sybok is an interesting character, performed well by the actor who played him. I'm always game to see stories that are Sybok-friendly.

That's exactly why I was disappointed to see that Goodman wouldn't be writing the Spock biography. He did some fun teasing at Spock's wedding in the Kirk and Picard books, and I was looking forward to seeing his version of who Spock's bride was in the Spock book.

I'm personally fine with discounting Sybok, as IMO he really detracts from Mr. Spock's backstory without adding much of anything besides making it more convoluted.

Seconded. There are a handful of TrekLit lines that really sunk in with me. Calhoun quoting Jim Kirk's autobiography musing on how disturbing it was for him whenever he encountered a rogue officer in Once Burned. Tuvok's last line in Destiny. And Garak's little epitaph for Ziyal at the end of The Never-Ending Sacrifice.

For me it's the melancholy scene as Calhoun and Shelby watch a now 'devolved' Janos at the end of Stone and Anvil.

The reason I didn't like that section of the book is because I'm not a fan of pretending something didn't exist just because it was goofy. We're counting all of TOS as official, but somehow ST5 is worthy of redaction? Seems a bit lopsided. :)

Una’s username for fanfic is Altariel; there are still about a dozen DS9 stories on AO3 under that name. I don’t know if there used to be more.
Thank you!

This. Trek is very silly, and I don't "get" why some of the silliness is okay but other parts arent. Real life has some shit and nonsensical episodes and movies too but they still happened.

I second the rec for Una's old fanfiction too. Some of it even wormed its way into my head as "what actually happened". From memory, my fave was a story about Garak and Tain.

I love Una's writing. I never thought The Never-Ending Sacrifice would be the type of book I would enjoy as it was about civilian life on Cardassia rather than Starfleet officers on a starship, but it became one of my favourite books and is almost as good as A Stitch In Time. I always look forward to a new book by Una as I have no idea what I will get, but it will be interesting and good.

This is interesting, I remember drifting away from DS9 because I was hung up on the starship going to a new planet every week format. Novels like Dwellers in the Crucible, The Vulcan Academy Murders, Mindshadow showed flashes of civilian life on Vulcan, and civilian life in the ST setting in general. So ironically a handful of old TOS novels showed me the appeal of stories that show civilian life and stories with a consistent location; made me reconceptualize my approach to DS9. I really liked the episode "Cardassians" during my re-watch and purchased a copy of The Never-Ending Sacrifice because I gather it follows what happens to the Cardassian youth who gets displaced from the home that he knows on Bajor.

I have a few of Una's Doctor Who work, too. Oddly, I haven't tried any of her work just yet. Threads like these are making me more curious, she's developed quite a reputation.

I love Spock as much as the next guy, but shouldn't they finish the captains before moving on to the first officers?
