Well that was..horrible.
A hung parliament is the worst possible result no matter which side you back...instability, uncertainty, and possibly another election in the very near future.
And just to top everything, it now seems Fielding will hang on.
God knows where we end up from here? As it stands we'll probably get an Abbott minority government that will try to keep things stable till the first opportunity arises to go back to the polls.
Some of those anti ALP swings in Sydney were eye watering. As expected, voters looking to punish state Labor couldn't hold back till March. The same geniuses behind that dreadful government are the people who did the job on Rudd.
Important the ALP keep it together, but after the McKew interview, there seems little chance of that.
Really bumpy few weeks coming up. We could be in uncharted waters if neither side can form some kind of coalition.
The Sussex St. union hacks who thought they could sack a Prime Minister without any consequences from voters have probably put Labor out of office for a decade.

I don't think so - with Abbott leading the government? Don't be suprised if there's an an election within the next 12 months.
But the thing is the - swing against the government was 5.8% but 3.7% of that went to the Greens which strong suggests the support isn't there for an Abbott lead coalition government but simply they've benefitted because the Greens didn't get enough votes to pick up more than 1 seat but they drew a chunk of the voter base away from the ALP.

I'd like to think that Labor's bleeding of votes to the Greens (whom I voted for) is punishment for their moving (immigration) and staying (censorship, gay marriage) right on social issues, but there's probably a more pragmatic explanation.
True. I expect it in 18 months to 2 years there will be another election.

That would be payback for the 1998 election where Labor won the 2PP (50.91 to 49.1) but didn't win office despite picking up 18 seats (14 from the coalition and 4 from independants). Might of been the only time in Australian electoral history since the 2PP was introduced that the party that won 2PP (thus the majority of votes) didn't win the eleciton.
For all the shit Abbott is spouting the inescapable fact is that the voters didn't want the coalition either - most of the votes away from the ALP went to the Greens not the Coalition.
The voters verdict as Dean Jeansch would say is a "plague on both your houses".
It looks like independent Rob Oakeshott is making a pitch to be the Speaker.
Rob Oakeshott says his preference would be for a cross-party cabinet - i.e. consensus politics - and I was wondering if people here think that this would work?

What I miss is the days when there were countless of politicians who were easy to send up. In the last few years politicians have become so much blander than they used to be.

The Greens guy (sorry, can't remember his name) had Bob Katter on his left, and he said, "You know, I never thought I'd be to the right of Bob Katter." In a way, it was like they were setting the agenda, not just for the next term, but the next election. Really interesting.
