The Ashes 2009

My (British) dad just shot me a text message along those lines too. He's not convinced you'll pull it off yet either.

I suppose with Rauf out there, anything is possible, but no I can't see Australia getting out of this one. Even chasing 250 batting last would be a massive challenge here.

The only questions left - will Fred even show up for his own party? And does Stuart Broad need a manager?

No matter what the result in this match is it is hard to see Hussey keeping his spot, save a truly amazing one day series where he scores a thousand runs. That reminds me that we still have that to look forward too, though given Australia's form in this year I doubt we'll really have all that much to cheer about.

My mum's English but she's lived here for so long that she doesn't support England when they play against Australia in any sport. However, that doesn't hold for the rest of her side of the family that are in England.

Yeah, it's odd scheduling - I mean who could care less about anything on the tour after the Ashes?

Agreed that Hussey will want to score plenty in the second dig.

England have a one-dayer against Ireland next week, curtailing any possible celebration/open-top bus/Flintoffing of breweries. I mean... Ireland? That's almost an insult.

Hopefully Siddle comes out breathing fire and takes the openers out early to keep things interesting.

That wicket is stating to look like Mumbai

How many warm up games did Australia have before the first test? I can only recall one but that can't be right.

Edit: Don't worry found it, they had two. That's pretty light.

Two games - one of them against the England 2nd XI.

Every other Ashes tour I can remember has begun with an ODI series of some sort.

3/39 at the moment..,here hoping England gets bowled out for 50! I obviously should have stopped drinking a few hours ago.

And yet another wicket to a no-ball. Yet another tirade from Beefy about the third Umpire drinking tea. Perhaps if the third drank Chardonney, he'd complain less?

Still, it continues to be a bowler's wicket, I think it's fair to say.

Matthew Hayden on TMS reckons Andrew Strauss will be Player of the Series, on the strength of his consistent batting. Interesting.

Well, we're frelled.

I suppose there'll be some bitching about the wicket but both sides have to bowl on it. There'll be some bitching about our team selection. It was an extremely fortunate toss for Strauss to win, as it turns out; not a good thing, that, and I'd say the same if we were in England's position. And I've ranted enough about umpiring standards so I won't go there again.

Leaving all that aside, seems like we've been outplayed. What more needs to be said?

Obviously, I'm a little gutted about today; all out for 160. Not good...not good at all. That said, and I think that English fans can agree here; never count the Australians out of anything. They will fight hard when their backs are to the wall. If I had to speculate, with the score currently at 58/3, 230 runs in the lead, if England were to bat to a lead of 450 runs, they'll declare, and put Australia in. Australia will give it a damn good go, and won't go down without a fight.

If they were to bowl England out cheaply tomorrow, Australia would take the fight to them, and I think England could find themselves with a real fight on their hands.

Well see what happens tomorrow.

The one thing I am enjoying about this is the reaction from every single England supporter I know - none of you are convinced you'll get over the line here. What happened to English optimism? :p

England could get bowled out without adding a single run and they'd still win this. London will disappear into a dust storm when they take the covers off that wicket for day 3.

Well, in situations like this, I always think: all Australia need are 7 balls. All England then need are ten. :D

I'm a confident English supporter! In fact, I'm off to Regent's Park today with a friend to watch the Cricket on the big screen.
