The Amazing Race - 5/03/2009 - (Live Commentary/Discussion)

Well that sucked. The only team left that I liked is gone now. I guess I will root for Tammy and Victor in the finale, because I dislike them the least. I can't stand Luke and Margie anymore, they are really getting on my nerves.

Remember, the editing is compressed, so she had to pee for a LOT longer than the runtime* of the sequence in the show.

*No pun intended.

Also, I think peeing in public by a foreigner is a capital offense in China. Or at least good for 30-40 years in prison.

Actually, it's quite the opposite. Public urination and defecation is far more common than you would see in most Western countries. Gotta go? Just drop a load in the bushes over there, wipe with your hand and move on. Some kids will walk around in crotchless pants to assist in easy unloading. If they really were in the race to win, they go until they pee, then they just let loose in their pants.

I don't really care who wins that much. I just hope there are a couple of decent tasks at the end, and nobody is challenged with eating half a pizza.

I wonder how close they really were to the cheerleaders. I think that Phil may have been exaggerating a bit. If it had come down to only seconds, we would have seen Kisha and Jen waiting in the background while the cheerleaders were checking in. Instead they seemed to not realize at all that they were last until Phil told them. That says to me that they didn't see the cheerleaders at all, which mean the cheerleaders had to have had time to not only check in and do their little speeches for the camera (which I'm sure is longer than just what we see on TV) but also get away to wherever they go after they check in. That sounds like a lot more than just "seconds" to me. I don't think the peeing actually made a difference.

I'd really like to just see a "full leg" one day. I wonder if they ushered the cheerleaders away just to allow the sisters to arrive on their own or whatever.

I also wonder if they need to stick around to get waivers from people. I noticed that they blocked out the face of a guard, but everyone else was just fine.

Also, Victor is still being a bit dickish, but I guess they're the only team to win. Clearly they deserved to dominate the China leg at least.

And it only took a challenge specifically centered on speaking Chinese for them to pull into the lead.

Oh, and I am impressed at how Luke is breaking down barriers of prejudice by proving that deaf people can be assholes, too.

^ He's also a gay asshole.

I have a good friend who's 28 and has lived in 5 countries on 3 continents for at least a year each. We've always joked that someday we'll apply to the race.

She wondered once if they shy away from choosing racers who have a specific knowledge of certain regions, but after Tammy and Victor there's no longer any question about that. I mean, they're clearly one of the more competent teams this go around, but it's like they were just gifted a spot in the final three...

Well, it's not like they were guaranteed to even make it to China.

Well, it's not like they were guaranteed to even make it to China.

The last three races, Mandarin has been as important as Spanish.
Honestly, if you are selected to be on the race, having basic knowledge of several major languages seems like an obvious thing to do - just as much as physical training.
If memory serves me right, the only region they've sort of really skipped out on is the Middle East, but learning Mandarin and Spanish seems like a good idea.

I agree. If I were going to be on the Race, I'd put together a cheat sheet of useful phrases in as many major languages as I can (if contestants are allowed to bring such a thing).

I imagine that they could use something like that... or maybe put together something on the race by getting a dictionary. I wonder if they're stuck in a hotel during the down time or if they can't just find a computer and google useful phrases online.
However, it's just a problem with things like Chinese, where you can't really translate based on pinyin... which is why I'm sure the taxi drivers and whatnot were having such a big problem with teams shoving cards into their faces.

Yeah, I'm not surprised nobody aside from Tammy & Victor went for the Chinese Restaurant detour. I have to admit I was impressed that Kisha & Jen were able to do it, though for all we know it could have taken them a lot longer than what we saw on the actual show.

Yeah. I kind of wish they had a small clock showing the time for each team, but I guess that'd ruin the suspense.
Then again, even the ABCs screwed up the waiter challenge the first time around.

Last week I was mad Kisha and Jen weren't eliminated. In retrospect, it was nice, since we got to watch those two losers flop around like dying fish on land.

Last week we had "I'm scared of a swimming pool". :rommie:

This week it's "I'm going to stop at a portable john maybe 200 yards away from the pit stop when we're all but even fighting for second to last place"! :guffaw:

Good riddance, beastly hags!
