The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.

I really wanted this show to be "the next big thing"...

I keep meaning to pick up the Series Box Set once I can get a disposable income.

It's about time to "hit that dusty trail" and wrap up my commandeering of this thread as I've finally finished watching the series. I found the last two episodes a bit limp, but not without their charms. They kind of went the "Seinfeld" route by bringing back a bunch of old guest stars (Pete, the professor played by John Astin, the pseudo-Elvis, Whip), and I didn't really mind since I liked most of them (all except fake Elvis).

The absence of Dixie was a shame, though. Now that I've seen the whole series, I can definitely say Dixie was the M.V.P of it. She held together every episode she was in and the highlights were the ones that gave her the most attention. I'm not exactly crushed that there was no second season since the show really fell apart for awhile in the middle of the season and a bit again towards the end after a strong first seven episodes. On the other hand, I think it might have been a lot more consistent in a second season since the plan was to make Dixie a regular.

Some of the humour and running gags wore thin after awhile, but the one joke I never got bored with was Comet's improbable level of intelligence. I think my favourite instance was in an episode where Brisco, Dixie, and a few others were trapped in a vault locked from the other side. They're shouting instructions on how to open the vault to someone outside of it, who they assumed was Lord Bowler. It took their silent accomplice two tries to open the vault, making them think Bowler was incompetent, but then when the vault opened, Comet was standing there. Comedy gold!

The jokes about new technology were generally funny too, but they rode a fine line between cute and too cheesy. The best example was in the final episode when the professor unveiled his greatest invention - an airship! He claimed he has a meeting scheduled to discuss it with a German named "Von Zeppelin" who wants to add metal armaments to it. Brisco replies, "A led zepplin! That could be your stairway to heaven!". I didn't know whether to laugh or roll my eyes when I heard that one!

For me, the show's biggest weakness was that the futuristic stuff with the Orbs became too hokey after awhile. I didn't like the reveal that John Bly was a time traveler from way into the future (the 27th century or something). I liked the idea that he was just really clever because he was a criminal mastermind. Him having the unfair advantage of being from the future annoyed me. It was too supernatural and took the melding of the Old West with sci-fi too far, in my opinion.

That twist wasn't all bad, though. At least it lead to a very amusing guest appearance by Melanie Smith from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", who appeared as a naked time traveler from the future, sent back to stop Bly. This confirmed my suspicion that she's a babe, which I figured based on the fact that she'd always looked pretty even covered in the hideous Cardassian make-up. :nyah: I also liked how the episode naturally lead to a cute moment where someone asks Brisco where she went and he deadpanned, "back to the future".

So it was a pleasure to watch this show and post about it here, despite the occasional corny jokes and a few disappointingly uninspired plots. I was pretty satisfied with it overall. The show compensated for the sometimes lame plots, some weaker side characters, and bad futuristic mumbo jumbo with consistently strong acting from the leads, a plethora of delightful guest appearances from '90s sci-fi mainstays (and some of other nice reminders of the nineties, like a woman who was in "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion", one of my favourite '90s comedies, as Dixie's sister), and lovely jokes about Comet the Wonder Horse and the technology of the future.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to my enjoyable experience watching the series by posting in this thread, and thanks to 'doubleohfive' for starting it so I could hijack it instead of starting a new one. I've got a newfound appreciation for Bruce Campbell's acting after seeing this (not that I didn't already love it), and even better, I'm now familiar with the talents of Kelly Rutherford and Julius Carry. I'm already planning to seek out some of Carry's work in the future, as I found out he was in a movie that sounds appealing to me. It's called "The Last Dragon". Very fancy! :D

I didn't think about it at first, but the line about how a prison with a certain model design had a flaw that allowed for escape (or something to that effect) did explain away them using the exact same prison set for every town.
