The idea is neat, but it's missing the rest of the TOS bridge crew, (besides Bones' cameo). I think everyone is pretty confident that somehow we'll see all of the TOS gang at some point or another in the film.
The one thing I really like about this idea is what happens to modern Spock. I agree with others' sentiments that it's a much more artful way of handling the frame story than Grandpa Spock talking to some rugrats about his glory days.
I alos agree with the posts that note the main plot is a pretty tired fomula in Star Trek, and it omits elements of "Kirk's life" that Abrams and co. have been alluding to for a while.
