Was down in Austin over the weekend, picked up a few action figures that I can't find around here...

Yes, I got him from ebay. I like the fact that it looks exactly like the monster in the film, and yet isn't tooo overly detailed.. so it still has the simple charm of all of the Kenner figures of the time. In fact, when Mad magazine did a spoof of Jedi, they drew the rancor monster and - while I find it interesting that all of the drawings were pretty accurate to the film.. look at how close their rancor is to the Kenner verson

Also, there's a lever in the back to control his mouth. His arms have very cool ball and socket shoulders for movement. His legs also move but they are actually different lengths so that he can stand in that classic rancor pose.

That is pretty close to the Kenner toy! They knew how to engineer figures well and make them a lot of fun back then, as evidenced by the lever and play features on the original Rancor. To be sure, the Rancors released since and starting in 1998 are a lot more screen-accurate but since so many of us collect the Modern figures to display more often than play with them I'd say the '80s Kenner Rancor is probably the most fun from the perspective of being a toy.
Figures back then were more quasi-accurate playthings and many had little more than a passing resemblance to the movie characters, but man, were they so much fun to play with and use to stretch the childhood imagination! Good times!
