The 82nd Annual Academy Awards - discussion thread

How predictable....some boring arthouse dreck that won't be remembered in a year's time wins best picture...*yawn*

It's obvious you haven't even seen the trailer, as the trailer for The Hurt Locker is action packed. Hell, the posters used for the movie has soldiers, images of war and explosions on it. There isn't a drop of "Art House" in this entire movie. So, since you're yawning, maybe you shouldn't have slept through all of those details before making a comment that shows a lack of understanding about the contents of the movie you just spoke of with great disdain.

Maybe they got Hurt Locker confused with An Education or A Single Man. Ahh whatevers it was a pretty ignorant thing to say triple 7. I got a chance to see a majority of the ones nominated with the exception of an Education and the Coen Bro's A Serious Man, but Hurt Locker was a really good almost seemingly smaller and intimate movie about a soldier and the passion he has for his job, even had an appearance by the lovely Evangeline Lily

can you imagine she is the same director who brought us the masterpiece Point Break?

I liked MARTIN/BALDWIN. I thought this was a pretty good show. I think the black girl, Gabriala i think, should have won. I havent seen this movie Precious, I will now, but her perfomance seemed more real than any of the other women nominated...

I think I read somewhere that James wanted her to win this. So thats cool...

BS. You know it's eating him up inside.

If he did say that he did it to be polite.

Im sure you talked to the man directly.... Of course we should not take the man at his word, or interpret his actions, but we should listen to you instead...

Good for Bigelow, good for the Hurt Locker. While I still need to see the film, I'm sure the award was well deserved. While I still think Cameron deserved at least the best director award for the sheer amount of innovative filmmaking and technology he helped bring to life to the movie industry, I really can't argue her getting it since I've heard The Hurt Locker is great.

I really don't get the Cameron hate from some people. Sure the man is arrogant, but he is also the most successful filmmaker of modern times, and really, I think he has earned the right to be. All the guy does is make make critically acclaimed and HUGELY successful films. I guess some people don't like the hype that his films get, but is that HIS fault. No.

Re-post from the Avatar thread

Well I think Avatar should have beat The Hurt Locker, I saw The Hurt Locker, it's a decent movie. Nothing I really dislike about it. But how can a movie that makes just over 21 Million WORLDWIDE be better than Avatar who beat that in one day.
The Hurt Locker is also the lowest grossing Oscar winner.
I was looking at the golden globe winners and comparing them, this is a much more realistic of the winners. The actor and actress were exactly the same.
Avatar won it there.

To me the best picture award has always been the weak link at the Oscars, it doesn't really reflect what the best movie actually was.

I guess I am ticked that this year there was a chance for 3 excellent sci-fi movies to win an Oscar and they all failed.

Star Trek
District 9
Avatar

This truly is the last frontier for sci-fi. If no Star Trek or Star Wars movie or the highest grossing movie of all time can't win it, then what can? :wtf:

Is that really how you quantify quality? By that same standard, how many times better than Hurt Locker is Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen?

When Chris Rock hosted the Oscars, he quizzed people at a local movie theater about the Best Picture nominees and they were completely clueless about them. But they sure knew what White Chicks was, so I guess that was a major Oscar snub there!

Everybody always references Transformers on this argument, but it is one of those movies that does well and is rated very poor, I think it got like 22 over RT. But nothing revolutionary was done in that movie anyways.

Sorry but I simply don't agree with The Hurt Locker winning, as a sci-fi fan I would have been happy with District 9 winning.

You should never use the old money thing normally but Avatar has made over $2.5 billion and is still going. Theres big like transformers $$$ then theres Avatar . This kind of smacks of Dark Knight a little which of course didn' even get a nomination because of its genre and I feel the Academy never wanted a SCI FI film to be best picture.

TBH Cameron work on Avatar is so unique I feel there are so few directors who could of pulled it off so he should of won. As for best movie well I've not seen Hurt Locker so I don't know.

One will win when the story isn't a remake of DANCING WITH WOLVES..sorry, Avatar had great FX, but none of its actors/actresses were nominated (none deserved to be) and the story, as I said, was FAR from original or ground breaking...you seem to want him to win because of its technical merits..

I dont think HURT LOCKER should have won either, I was pulling for Precious...but oh well..but I am glad AVATAR did not win..it was not the "BEST" movie of the year..Oh, and i am not anti-cameron..I thought TITANIC should have won and it did...

How inundated with war and killing muslims oops I mean insurgents can we be? The Hurt Locker was so predictable like watching another History Channel documentary. The whole Islamic war thing is getting kind of boring. What does it tell the rest of the movie watching world about our western imperialist love for war?

That U.S. troops are doing a great job in Iraq?

I think there are many people like that. Hopefully it shall be screening here sometime in the next week or two.

Now we have children's programs on.

It came through the cinemas in mid-Feb, so it only had a 2 or 3 week run as it has since left, which isn't all that long.
I should have said that is when I plan on seeing it. I know it's screening at the cinema in Newcastle.

Just had another look, looks like it is still in very limited release here in Brisbane as well...just not at the two cinemas closest to me, which I based my previous statement on.

It's only at the cinema in the city here in Newcastle. Not screening at the other two. I wonder if it will get more screening, starting on Thursday. I've decided to see it tomorrow.

I wasn't the biggest fan of Hurt Locker around these parts, but allow me to say something nice, given the time that's in it:

It's the best film about the Iraq War.

Beyond that it's also just a good film. I wouldn't be surprised if it's remembered in many years - believe it or not, the memory of art films can survive decades - they can even be a little more long-lived than smash-bash blockbusters. The very first film awarded an Academy Award for best picture was a financial flop; Sunrise, and to this day it's regarded as a masterpiece of silent cinema.

Beyond that, well. My money on best foreign film was either on the Germans (The White Ribbon) or the French (A Prophet); so the Argentians winning is the only actual surprise I had here. Kudos Argentina!

Hurt Locker is hardly an "art film". I thought it's primary attribute was "bland".
And saying it's the best movie about the Iraq war is about as meaningful as "funniest Saw movie".

I "stole" it sometime last summer I think, watched it and thought it's utterly unremarkable.

I liked The Hurt Locker, so I have no problem with it winning.

But Sandra Bullock won for The Blind Side? WTF? That movie was awful.

No offense meant to anyone, it is my own personal preference.

I find "real life" war flicks boring. if I want to see war or other "current event" stuff, i can turn on the news. I won't bother seeing it even when it comes around on TV.

You have just revealed that you didn't see The Hurt Locker. It was a riveting, edge-of-your-seat action film.
