The 11th Doctor could have been dressed like Captain Jack...

^There was actually a sketch on a British comedy show that had a guy playing Eccleston. Turned out in the sketch Eccleston's entire family were Trek fans.

If it had been Tennant, he'd probably actually do the sketch himself and don a Trek suit.

Funny thing is Smith in public is seen many times with a fedora and scarf....

Funny you should mention that, im, apparently, an eccentric dresser according to my other half and mates.

I have brown corduroy hip length jacket that i wear with either a t-shirt or tshirt/shirt combo. Also have a few pairs of flared jeans, loads of converse trainers, sometimes mix-matched, a shoulder bag with badges all around the strap some of which are Who badges and the list goes on and on. i look like a uni student sometimes, and i left college 4 years ago.:)

I dont care what i wear, so it doesnt really matter. RTD said that he wanted Nine to be almost neutral and blend in away from the story so as not to distract. And if i remember, Tennant was the one who wanted a long coat becuase he wasnt happy in just a suit, so they tailored him a swanky ankle length ultra cool trench coat.

Im guilty too to assuming he would be dressed really OTT like Jack Sparrow, but in Smiths case, i can understand if he isnt happy and cant relax in something hes not happy in because otherwise, it shows through in the acting and body language etc, so they obviously kept trying different combos.

I like Nine and Tens outfits, they could be from any era as can Smiths, obviously the converse are out of place, but who looks at a mans shoes anyway? And hell, whos shallow enough these days to care what the guy next to you on the train is dressed like, i along probably many others get funny glances from accross a room or street, but really, its their problem. :p

I imagine Jack Sparrow is a bit further out there than they were actually aiming. I'd think something more along the lines of the outfit of 'The next Doctor' wore is what they were intending. Just a little over-the-top and very clearly out of our period, but still classy.

^ Aren't they the boot version? Ie the ones that go higher than your ankles? I thought they were. And I've always referred to footwear like that as boots, including the pair I have ...

They're called "high-tops." Boots are a whole different thing. :)

Plus, nobody wears boots to play baseball.

^ You say Tomayto, I say Tomahto.

We don't call trainers 'sneakers' over here and in some parts of Ireland they're called 'gutties' for some reason. I've never heard anyone refer to any footwear as hi-tops other than on tv or online. We call those particulars items that Tennant wears 'boots.' (*shrugs)

Nor do we play baseball. But I've often heard them referred to as baseball boots. So sue me.

I definitely agree on Nine and Ten's outfits; I love both of them.

Who looks at a guy's shoes? I do, but I'm gay. (And I like Chuck Taylors for the record. :p)

Honestly, I've been known to stroll into the office wearing business clothes, red Chuck Taylors, and a woollen early-18th great coat. I leave the tricorn at home because I don't want to get funny looks.:)

Regardless of how our (contemporary) society views the Doctor's fashions, I imagine he looks pretty clownish on all the alein planets he visits regardless. I remember when they first introduced Romana they had her research what the clothing was like on other planets before she went down...That'd make more sense.

Well, I'm just saying, as someone who lives in a country that DOES play baseball (and quite a bit of it), we would never call them that. :p

Fair enough. But I'm sure you're aware that different things get called different names in different countries. Suspenders refer to things that hold up men's trousers in the US (what we call 'braces') but they're part of women's lingerie in the UK and Ireland. The term 'sports jacket' would rarely be used here. A 'fanny pack' has no meaning here as 'fanny' doesn't refer to the backside (think a few inches to the front instead...).

And boots can cover items as diverse as Doc Martins, cowboy boots, Ugg boots, ankle boots, or what are sometimes euphemistically called 'fuck-me boots.' So like I say, you say potayto, I say potahto.

FMBs are my favourite kind of boots...

To look at, not to wear or anything...

I've always though the definition of a boot is anything that rises up past your ankle bone, under those criteria converse type baseball footwear would seem to fit the criteria...

Moving on from our shared language. . . What sort of outfit would ya'll LIKE to see in the future? I'm personally kind of 'meh' about the new outfit, mostly due to it looking too normal and 'counter-trendy' for a time-traveling 905-year-old man. I see guys wearing stuff like that nearly every day, minus the bow tie. The tweed could have easily had a bit more life to it, maybe as a hunting jacket or with a tartan pattern on it. Somehow the plainness and 40/50s collegiate look of the whole outfit just emphasizes his youth and makes him look uninteresting, which is one thing the doctor should never be IMO. It looks like something he took out of his own closet.
