The 100 Greatest Movie Insults of All Time

Profanity's overrated, and gets pretty tiresome and unimaginative after a while. It is possible to insult someone without resorting to an f-word or two.

Missed from that list... Buford T Justice. "There's no way, no way that you came from my loins. Soon as I get home, first thing I'm gonna do is punch yo mamma in da mouth!"

Charles Dreyfus: "Compared to Clouseau, Atilla the Hun was a Red Cross Volunteer!"

Full Metal Jacket is full of timeless ones but in the end I still prefer the classics:
Hudson: Hey Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?
Vasquez: No. Have you?

See, I thought the #1 insult was The Phantom Menace. But I guess y'all are talking about lines...:guffaw:

I'm really glad Griswold's rant from "Christmas Vacation" is in there. Chevy Chase is hilarious. "Where's the Tylenol!?"

Most of those were terrible. Profanity != Good.

Personally, as someone who tries not to swear that much, I see the opposite as being true also, Profanity != Bad. I do think the insults in this clip were, for the most part, pretty creative uses of profanity.

It's all the delivery. That's why Sgt. Hartman is so well remembered.

No Jay (of Jay and Silent Bob) quotes?

And of course, this one would probably be in my top twenty...Maria Conchita Alonso from THE RUNNING MAN "...there's nothing funny about a dickless moron with a battery up his ass!"

Also, The Wild Bunch from Robert Ryan:

"....- and what do I have? Nothin' but you egg-suckin', chicken stealing gutter trash with not even sixty rounds between you. We're after men - and I wish to God I was with them. The next time you make a mistake, I'm going to ride off and let you die."

Memento:
"You know what one of the reasons for short term memory loss is? Venereal disease. Maybe your cunt of fucking a wife sucked one too many diseased cocks and turned you into a fucking retard."

Agreed. I find, however, that it's best used sparingly, to punctuate a particular point and so on. Strings of obscenities don't do much for me.
I agree. That's why I hated that film Superbad.

In the video, they missed Dennis Farina in Midnight Run, so here he is!

Done well, such as in Christmas Vacation it can be effective, but yes, if done poorly, adding obscenity upon obscenity is just embarrassing. I think what makes Clark Griswold's delivery so effective, and MeanJoePhaser is correct, it is all about delivery is that it doesn't just roll off the tongue. I know I get tongue-tied and at a loss for words when I'm very upset, so it would be natural to stumble and concoct odd expressions when you are that upset about something. The ones that easily roll off the tongue sound practiced, and in my opinion fail for the most part.

The exception that fits that rule would be Sgt. Hartman as perfectly portrayed by R. Lee Ermey, because he does come across as a guy who seems to incorporate stringing together insults, obscenities, curse words, etc. to degrade his soldiers. I see him as so practiced he can string together the most vulgar things and make them sound equally off-the-cuff as if you pissed him off to the point where he has no choice to say them, as well as well-practiced as if he sat up nights dreaming of insults to use on you, and you in particular.
