That thing [SPOILERS]

An aging hero perishes and passes the torch in the first film of each trilogy now. I wonder what other parallels we'll see in 8 and 9?

I can see there being a Luke/Kylo Ren light saber duel in the next movie paralleling the Luke/Vader duel in Empire Strikes Back.

Given the plot structure of TFA, I see something like this occurring...

Rey will be training with Luke when Kylo Ren sets a trap for Rey using her friends as bait. Rey will go off to rescue her friends over the objections of Luke, who feels that she's not ready. Rey will be totally out-classed and when Ren has Rey at his mercy, he'll reveal the secret of her parentage. Also, there will be a cliff-hanger involving one of Rey's friends, probably Finn.

;)

Also, Rey will lose a hand or an arm. ;)

I'd been prepared for this development ever since Harrison's participation was announced. I couldn't see him doing the whole trilogy (he'll be pushing 80 by the time Episode IX comes out, for one thing), and I couldn't see Han Solo retiring and running a guest house on Dantooine, so that only left the Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan mentor>death role. It's been long-known that Ford wanted Solo to die in ROTJ, so it felt like something he might push for again this time, given the circumstances. I'm reminded of Leonard Nimoy being swayed to return for ...Khan by the promise of a great death scene.

Somehow though, I was expecting Han to go to his death much more willingly; a noble torch-passing sacrifice with some heroic final words right at the end. I think because Han isn't a Jedi, and so although he fulfils the Obi-Wan role here, he won't be back as a Force ghost - this is the first real, permanent death, death of a major character - I didn't think they'd go for something quite so brutal and sudden and shocking. I thought it was beautifully done though; a final gamble on his son, the perfect full circle to his character arc, given how much of a mercenary he was 38 years ago.

It seems to me like JJ took elements of the EU and twisted them around a bit. Chewie died in the EU, so JJ killed off Han in the new movie. Luke had a son named "Ben" in the EU, now "Ben" is Han & Leia's son- who, like their son in the EU, goes to the darkside, albeit in a much less dramatic fashion. Luke had a son in the EU, now he (maybe) has a daughter. As for parallels with the EU, for anybody familiar with the character from Star Wars Legacy comics, Rey seemed (to me) heavily inspired by that series' character of Ania Solo.

And Starkiller Base mayhap inspired by the "Galaxy Gun"?

(Possibly irrelevant, no more than a sidebar.)

When I first heard about Starkiller it sounded more like the Sun Crusher, but in function it does seem to be more like the Galaxy Gun, yeah. Or Centerpoint Station.
