Yes, it was real. Whether it was a bright star or just a light that was perceived as a star, I do not know.

It was a UFO.

It was a light from God used to guide the way to Jesus' birthplace. It could have been a star or it could have been a very bright angel. From what I understand the shepherds followed it and it came to rest over the manger so it could have been a very powerfully lite angel leading the way.
