what was it a star going nova? a plant? or a sign from god of the birth of his son ! merry chrismas every 1 bye;)

Astronomic records (surprisingly well-kept) from that time suggest that, if such a thing DID occur, it was 7 years (give or take) off from the year "0000"...which, of course, was only a calculation by a monk and, frankly, not the strongest starting point from which to gauge a calendar, but there we are.

Most historians believe that the 'Christmas star' was a series of astronomical events that had meaning to astrologers of the day, not so much to casual observers. That's why, when the 'wise men' (also translated as 'astrologers,' and by the way, the Bible does not say how many there were) from the East came to Jerusalem, no one else seemed to know about the 'star' that had guided them. Best candidates for stellar events occurred around 2 B.C. It's fascinating to me how God often uses natural events to make a statement - or in this case, herald the birth of His son.

Merry Christmas to everyone!

It's just a legend.

But "The Star" by Arthur C Clarke is my all-time favorite short story.

If Jesus was born it most likely was June 17th 2BC when Saturn and Jupiter were so close it was really bright.

Nice. I love 9 Chickweed Lane, but I hadn't see that one.

I'm not even a Christian, and that story gave me chills when I first read it. :bolian:
Same here. There was also a pretty nice adaptation on the 1980s Twilight Zone revival.

On the other hand, it's really fascinating to me how people often interpret perfectly natural events to mean whatever they would it like to mean about their peculiar mythology! :p

There's always a group of smarties like the Heaven's Gate folks, willing to chase their comets 'round perdition and the rings of Nibia or what have you.
