texting while driving.

I'm not anti-driving, I enjoy doing it, I do it well and I don't go slowly. However, I do go cautiously, even when I'm going 60. I'm in a ton of metal, I ain't taking chances by sending a message that says, "LOL guys, im in me car, lisin t duh boss".

 Oh don't get me wrong, I love driving too - but I think that as a people we have a remarkably blasé approach to it, given how apeshit we go over other much more minuscule risks.

btw, I'm driving now ;)

Now that it's banned in California I don't do it at all, same with yapping on the cell phone. I did do both when they weren't banned, to be fair I never really had a problem talking on the phone and driving, I would still be focused on the road, and people on the line would complain that I'm not listening to them. As for texting I would do it mostly at red lights. I'd certainly only read texts at red lights. I can type the stupid predictive text pretty well, one handed and without looking, so I'd occasionally be finishing a message while actually driving.

What? You don't like the txts I send you? :(

Bottom line: people who text message while driving or talk on the phone should be horsewhipped.

And flogged.

And dragged from their cars and beaten.

Then we should hurt them.

Oh yeah, and fines and jail time should be mandatory.

Unfortunately people would still do it, even if we do ALL that you suggest. We have jail time (and in some states death penalty) for commiting murder, and yet murders happen EVERYDAY.

Well, I'm sure most people would understand that most of my suggestions were exggaerations, but I DO think that we should impose income crippling fines for these offenders. Seriously, drivers should know better. It's a common sense thing.

Exaggeration or not, the simple fact is no matter the punishment, people will keep on texting while driving.

I do actually, people's lives depend on it.

Well, it's a good thing you're not a member of your profession back in 1970s!

Yes, it would have been very frustrating having all those people die.

Tell you what, only people who need phones to ensure lives won't be lost can have them.

If you're a soccer mom that just wants to gab about little Billy's latest trip to get his shots while going 65 down the left lane of a 75mph interstante: NO CELL-PHONE FOR YOU!

If you're a doctor: You can have a cell-phone.

That or we just start installing much stiffer and harder fines/punishments for driving while distracted (be-it on the phone, shaving, eating, whatever.)

For the record, I don't think we need MORE laws governing cell-phone/texting use while driving. The laws we have are plenty good enough. We just need to actually enforce them and make the penalties stiff enough to greatly deter people from doing it.

I mean, if all you're going to get is a non-moving violation inattentive driving fine for $100 then people aren't going to care.

Make it $500, a moving violation, with mandatory traffic courses then you'll have more of deterant.

A great many people still drink and drive, but we'd have many more people drinking and driving if the penalties for doing it weren't so stiff and harsh.

Are you proposing that we've no punishment for any crime at all?

Robbery, murder, and much, much more are all illegal and can carry stiff punishment yet people still do those things.

Brilliant!

Laws don't work.

ANARCHY!!!!

Ofcourse we should have punishments for people who break the law.

So, then, you just countered you own argument against srticter punishments for people who use their phone (esp. texting) while driving?

Not *ALL* phones. Just cell-phones. You don't need to be in contact with people 24/7 and certainly not while driving.

We'll go back to using pagers.

Yes, and many more people died because of it!

How many times do you have to be shown what nonsense this argument is before you give it up? We get it, you don't like cell phones; so don't use one. No one cares. But stop acting like your anachronistic view of the world is the proper one, or that just because you can't seem to imagine a need for cell phones, that they don't actually have value.
