In your opinion it is not canon. Reality is this backstory was officical authorized by the shows producers.
That reality isn't as concrete as you might think though. It's basically canon with quotes around it until it's contradicted or confirmed on screen.
It's not an opinion, it's fact.
No one has ever called the books canon, but people have said they're not.
So were the Discovery novels, but they've all been contradicted.
yes, I remember that at least some were based on existing commercially-available models.
As it should be.IMHO if they were gonna to a reunion special/TNG S8, PIC S1 would have been the time. But it's what they're doing, so I can either give it a chance or be grumpy for the rest of my life.
Of course, I choose the latter.
