Spoilers Terry Matalas is doing a Reddit Q&A

Terry said Starfleet was just going for a nostalgic twist to inspire. The ship is still all 25th Century tech.
That was fine when it was the Titan. But the idea of making the next Enterprise the same ship is absurd.

when they later corrected that mistake and made the B an advanced Excelsior design newly built for flagship status?
That's not why they modified the Excelsior for Generations.

Why is it any different? Still an advanced 25th Century ship that helped save the Federation.

One I never quite grok. Every time it comes up I try but it is a struggle.
I mean, Kirk even said that its more than a ship. McCoy said that the Enterprise is more than just a ship. Its not like I'm pulling klingons out of a wormhole here making this up. This is established in universe that ships ARE characters as much as the people.

Who cares that the in-universe characters think. He's talking about his own opinion.

People say lots of absurd things. Doesn't mean I get it.

It's a ship. It needs maintenance and repair not respect.

You know, unless you are going to engage with me the in universe reasoning, this conversation is going nowhere. I didn't get an answer to my original question as to why he chose to rename the Titan and slap the Enterprise label, and I'm frankly not caring about your opinions on why you like the older designs. So lets leave it at that. And more of you are joining in on the peanut gallery here.

I was not aware of the rules or in universe parameters. So, I responded with my opinion.

Mostly because in universe there's no logic. It's emotionally driven about the importance of the Enterprise name. It's pretty clear that legacy means more than the ship class.

The ship is a character itself. It's own quirks etc.
Y'all may not think so.. But others do. And to me it shows a lack of respect for the character of the ships.

Nah. He respected it fine.

Because he liked the ship design. That's all it needs.

It and Seven helped saved the Federation *shrug*

It's interesting to consider the idea of the ships as characters. Especially when Star Trek has the unusual (as far as I understand it) tradition of using a definite article before the name of the ship. Almost every time someone said "the Titan" it felt really weird to me, like from Voyager, Enterprise, and I think (?) Discovery they'd moved away from that. But I guess it's been the Cerritos and the Protostar. They only times I've seen "the Voyager" is on this board and Wil Wheaton once, I think.

I recently learned that using the phrase "the Ukraine" can be seen as a political statement, and that's why it's not used much outside Russian propaganda now.

  • Capt. Kirk) "We want the Enterprise."
  • (Alice #251 through 500) "The Enterprise is not a want or a desire. It is a mechanical device."
  • (Capt. Kirk) "No, it's a beautiful lady and we love her."
  • (Alice #251 through 500) "Illogical, illogical. All units relate. All units. Norman, coordinate."
