Terry Farrell and DS9 Season 7

No. I thought Harry could be dumb and naive at times, but he also had some good qualities. Believe it or not, there are some people around here who don't hate Harry Kim!

I didn't like Jadzia at all. Period. I also don't like Terry Farrell as an actress. So I'm very glad she didn't end up on Voyager because I probably would have come to dislike the show.

Okey dokey...

I agree. Much of my criticism of Farrell has to do with her inability to portray her character. By mid-series, Jadzia Dax was a good sounding board and contrast to the other characters on the show. Farrell's scenes with Dorn and Brooks are quite good, but they almost always have nothing to do with the character, especially not her "Trillness" or compossibility. On the To The Journey podcast, they speculated that Tery Farrell would have been an excellent addition to Voyager. I would agree: she would fit in better if the show were focused more on the alien encounter of the week.
It's a good thing she wasn't on Voyager. They might not have had the excellent Jeri Ryan as a cast member, and she could act rings around most of the others. She's definitely better than Terry Farrell.
Would you like it better if she replaced Harry Kim?

It would have been better had she replaced Chakotay.

Not a bad idea. Chakotay could be seriously out of it at times. As a rule, I don't like the episodes where he plays a prominent part.

I don't see any reason to call Worf dumb or an idiot. He's taciturn and gruff, but that's no reason to think he's stupid.

Lots of people are attracted to, and have successful marriages with, people who are not exactly like them. I thought Jadzia's chemistry with Worf was strong, one of the bright spots in her DS9 role.

To me it seems that their relashionship was doomed from the start, remember that she almost died already in Change Of Heart.

Go. Listen. Farrell does not outrightly say she is a bad actress. However, she admits that (1) she was incapable of playing a person of stature, and leaned on Brooks for support; (2) other (unnamed) members of the cast made her feel that she lacked sufficient talent; (3) she often held up production, causing exasperation among the cast; (4) she should have been actively assigned an acting coach as part of her contract.

That's not what she says. She says they did assign her an acting coach because she had trouble with the dialogue ... which is pretty unsurprising when you look at the way Dax was written in the beginning. Very stilted, lots of unnatural phrasing, lots of technobabble.

Keep listening: don't stop at the first five minutes.. She explicitly states near the end of the interview that an acting coach should have been included in her contract.

What does she need an acting coach for? Most of her scenes don't require any acting.

Patrick Stewart mentioned Star Trek dialogue and lingo is very hard to memorize and perform. This doesn't mean she was a bad actress but being the science officer, learning Klingon because the writers grounded her in the Klingon culture and dealing with Worf, and later the pilot of star ships can be difficult.

Stars like Stewart, Brooks, and Mulgrew will get a coach because it's part of their contract, but for a regular actor - he she has to pay for one with their own pockets.

I don't see why she need an acting coach to rehearse klingon. It's not like people can tell the difference between good and bad klingon. Hell, most people wouldn't know if she just made random noises.

Some people just aren't that good at their jobs. I'd rather she played a disappointing Star Trek role than pay for her welfare checks.

I doubt she'll ever collect welfare checks, at worst she'll have to cut down on the beluga caviar.

Klingon language has been quite popular for Trek fans for a long time. So the writing has to go to a linguist for the appropriate pronunciations. There's even a book about the language and how to speak Klingon and fans will know if the actors get it wrong. So an acting coach does help.

Could be worse, at least she's not in charge of putting expiration dates on food or something. She couldn't even correctly figure the expiration date on her career-defining role.

English also has such a book - it's called a 'dictionary'.

I can't speak for the horrible 4th through the 7th seasons of DS9, but as far as the seasons before Jadzia was a fine character.

But there's no kligon natives. As a French I can spot a foreigner even if his accent is near perfect, even if he would fool any people who took French in college. That's the difference between a real and a fake language, no matter how popular, it's much easier to learn. For one thing, no one expects you to pronounce words that are unpronounceable by English people in general.

Terry Farrell's a professional actor and she's well aware of what she requires to perform a role. In Hollywood, acting coaches are hired for that; which is to assist a performer to read with and perform lines at a steady pace. They also gives suggestions. Coaches are not hired because acting is bad but assist on the pace of performances and deadlines for the call sheet for a scene.

Well, thanks for clearing that up.
