If they have an astronomer with them.

i would guess that would be be one of there first recruits to get a scientifict research team together to check the planet and also verify it is 85 million years ago, star patterns are one way to do that besides soil samples and planet based materials.

I haven't read the thread or finished the pilot yet, I'm about 40-something minutes in, but I'm sharing my thoughts anyway...

- It's an interesting concept. The idea of people settling the past isn't something I've seen before. Loved the dinosaurs, the large insects, and the over oxygenation was a nice touch.

- Loved the opening shot with the camera panning over the moon to reveal an almost dead Earth.

- I thought I recognized the kid, Josh, isn't it? Then I realized that he was on Degrassi.

- I also saw the red ranger from Power Rangers RPM.

- It's always nice to see Allison Miller.

- Tom mentioned aliens and/or intelligent life showing up and I don't think it's a bad idea.

- I plan to stick with the show.

- I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes another one-season show like all the other high concept Lost clones that came before.

That's all I can say for now.

Terra Nova ratings are in... and they are disappointing: link

What is interesting though is that the demo increased a bit in the second hour. The low ratings may have been a result of the timeslot. (Up against Two and a Half Men, How I Met Your Mother, Dancing With The Stars, and a rivalry Monday Night Football game featuring the Cowboys).

You know what? I like human drama, but interest in it is predicated upon REALLY well written characters REALLY well acted. Most TV shows seem to think that people just talking each other with a level of intensity over typical soap opera crap is "good human drama".

It bores the shit out of me.

I like Jason Mara.

I like Jason Mara shirtless even more.

And I liked his character's attitude--he not only did the ag duty he was assigned, he did a good job and actually enjoyed it. Shows good attitude, which is what whatshisname (Steven Lang's character) saw.

So the hangout teens were those who lost parents but were old enough to be without foster parents of some kind? Surprised they're not being trained up in some way.

Maybe I missed something, but I didn't get the impression that the colony was actually communicating directly with the future. Some of the persons travelling through the portal could have brought detailed communications from the future, but I don't remember any indication of two way communication.

Yeah obviously the character writing needs some more work, but O'Mara and Lang both have such strong, compelling personalities that they still managed to make their characters seem fairly interesting and complex, I thought.

The rest of the family might be a bit cheesy and generic, but that's just par for the course for a family adventure show.

I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes another one-season show like all the other high concept Lost clones that came before.

This show is expensive as hell and the ratings are going to drop more in the upcoming weeks. Not looking good.

I wonder if there will ever be another Sci Fi show on network television that can top LOST.

Monday is just way too crowded with hit shows. They probably should have premiered it on a Sunday or Tuesday.

Well just adding up the facts I got to that there had to be *SOME WAY* they were communicating with the future.

They sent a probe through the fracture and then decided to send people through. Somehow they had to be able to get back information from that probe or else why would you send people through something you had no idea where it went?

How would they know it was 85 million years in the past if they weren't able to get back info from there?

Then there's the conversation between the Dad and the Commander when the Commander reveals what the Sixes(sixers?) are and the Dad asks him something along the lines of what the response from the future was and Commander says he didn't tell them they broke off because he doesn't know who to trust there because of an entire Pilgrimmage with an agenda being sent to the past.

If they manage to survive 20 million years they have the Cretaceous Extinction event to look forward to ;)

I don't know. It's not a bad show, and dinosaurs are cool. But I'm not completely taken by it. I'll keep watching it for now though, since dinosaurs are cool.

As predicted, the family-driven storyline is complete drivel. We got the husband and wife "trying to make it work." The emo teenage son who tries to score some tail and falls in with a bad crowd, although this is more a misguided crowd who ends up in trouble as opposed to causing it. The teenage daughter who flirts with the local pretty boy, and the young child who expresses wide-eyed wonder over everything around her. Obviously, I'm not too impressed with these characters.

Fortunately, there's Stephen Lang. Just like in Avatar, he's easily the best thing in this show and makes it worth watching. The guy is pure awesome, tough and badass. He got all the best dialogue and scenes and even his backstory is kind of interesting, particularly with him surviving 118 days in the jungle alone when he first arrived.

I like that they're not making the show too complicated with all kinds of story arcs. The storyline is pretty simple, really, a human colony on pre-historic Earth with dinosaurs. The other colony of "Sixers" is kind of interesting, though I would have preferred they left the conspiracy of who are they, who sent them, what do they want out of it. They could have just been disgruntled settlers who decided to go and start their own colony because they didn't like the way Terra Nova was being run and the story wouldn't have lost anything.

The bit with the mysterious and dare I suggest "alien" markings and symbols doesn't interest me at all.

And finally, I have to ask, was it necessary to make this time travel to an alternate timestream of Earth? Couldn't they have just had a portal going to another planet which just happens to be remarkably Earth like? I suppose that would have been too much like Stargate though. And besides, it shouldn't surprise me that a Brannon Braga story would focus heavily around time travel.

So, although not the best thing I've watched, it's not bad either and does have potential, provided they don't screw it up. After all, even Broken Bow was a decent pilot with potential, and look how Enterprise ended up. But let's be optimistic for the time being.

Ya they have to be transmitting back to the future because it was established that they are different time stream so 'leaving' messages buryed to be dug up in 85 million years does not work.

Was it just me, or did anyone notice the Terra Nova theme music (when they went back in time and they showed those sweeping landscape vistas) sounded similar to the Asguard Theme from Stargate SG-1?

Although I agree with you, there is room for optimism when seeing that the ratings stayed steady and actually improved slightly in the 2nd hour. The ratings for next week's episode will be interesting.

I'll be the odd person out and say i liked the pilot. Dunno how the series will end up, won't be surprised if it gets cancelled, but for now it's set to auto record on my DVR, so i'll catch each new episode on my free time.
