Ten reasons to hate TNG?

]Two non-white main actors in TOS, two non-white main actors in TNG. And since when is Geordi keeping the engines running worse than Uhura answering the phone?

:guffaw:

Anyways... I can agree, that, at some points TNG was a little bland. It wasn't quite as dynamic as TOS sometimes was. On the other hand, it was in some ways more inventive in its storylines, and there were more people to work with on the show. Saying that the effects aren't very good is like complaining that a movie from the 20's is black and white. TOS wasn't great either. But again, we're talking the '60s. I'll also say that the characters did get along a little TOO well. There was no friction anywhere, for the most part. (Of course, if Trio had gotten sucked out an airlock, that also could have greatly improved the show.:evil:)

I agree though that the story potential of the Borg was largely wasted after "Q Who?" and "Best of Both Worlds".

They would have been best left as the Daleks and Cybermen were in Doctor Who stories of old. Generally, each Doctor got one or two pretty decent stories with those two villains. If one was iffy, you could forget about it, if one was good it stood out even more.

If we'd left TNG with those two stories, and had one or two decent stories in DS9 and Voyager (but I'd draw the line at Enterprise at all) polished off with a decent movie, it would have been great.

It's not the funniest thing I've ever read but it does have a few valid points.

The uniforms were pretty lousy until they got the collars (the skants were just outright pathetic).

It did tend to be rather bland in the early seasons and that's not so much a new show finding it's legs as it was GR's utterly daft insistence that there be no human conflict, that we'd evolved beyond such things. Several writers, directors and producers in the shows early seasons felt that way and spoke quite honestly about how GR's views limited the drama.

The Borg were done as an enemy after "Best of Both Worlds", they just didn't have the guts to say that the one Cube was their entire species and they were all killed in BOBW.

It's not Ten Reasons to Hate TNG, you guys. It's Ten Things to Hate ABOUT TNG...and there's a big difference. I don't really agree with all of his points, but it seems to me the author doesn't completely hate the show. All the series have flaws.

The Show Was Clearly a Product of It's Time
Well no kidding. What show isn't? TOS is also clearly a product of it's time.

The Show Was Offensively Inoffensive (1)
Ok, that was disappointing. Some more conflict among the main cast would have been nice. The little we got from time to time wasn't enough.

This Here Is An Allegory
Well, yeah. Or is he honestly trying to say that episodes like Let That Be Your Last Battlefield weren't allegorical? Though, I will admit, the whole "bigotry is wrong" angle was massively overused, and not just by TNG.

The Show Was Offensively Inoffensive (2)
The mostly Caucasian cast? Like the two actors in TOS who weren't white? Let's review.... TOS = two non-white actors, five white actors. TNG = two non-white actors, seven white actors (two of whom left the show). DS9 = four non-white actors, six white actors (one of whom left the show). VOY = four non-white actors, six white actors (one of whom left the show). ENT = two non-white actors, five white actors. Noticing a pattern here? The larger the casts got, the more diverse they became.

Riker and Troi: Science Fiction's Most Passionless Unrequited Love
I'll agree, this wasn't a storyline I enjoyed. But at least it didn't descend into the "will they/won't they" crap that ENT did with Trip and T'Pol.

Almost Everything About Data
Okay, he obviously missed the whole character arc for this character.

While I'm At It, The Rest Of The Crew, Too
I don't understand this at all. Does he honestly expect Oscar or Emmy caliber performances? If you want to see bad acting, watch Babylon 5.

The Borg
So his problem is that another show "ruined" a villain, and it's therefore the fault of the show that introduced them. :wtf:

Those Uniforms
Okay, those first uniforms were god-awful.

It Ruined the Franchise All The Way Until JJ Abrams Saved It
:wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf: Was this guy high when he wrote this article?

Rarely has there been a better time for...

However:

It's not Ten Reasons to Hate TNG, you guys. It's Ten Things to Hate ABOUT TNG...and there's a big difference. I don't really agree with all of his points, but it seems to me the author doesn't completely hate the show. All the series have flaws.
True.

I will always have a soft spot for TNG, this is the show that first got me into Trek. I am only 26 so wasn't alive when TOS aired....and as a result never really been a fan. With that said though I would never decide to write a article saying why everyone else should hate it (not that I actually hate TOS).

A couple of things struck me about the article though. It stated at the begining of the peice;

Star Trek: The Next Generation was my first real Star Trek series. I was born too late for the original show (and the animated follow-up, for that matter), and as a kid, the re-runs just didn’t do it for me.

Then of course described TNG in a way that clearly shows he didn't enjoy it at all. Then he stated;

It Ruined The Franchise All The Way Until JJ Abrams Saved It

So since he didn't like TOS (or at least that is suggested) or TNG, and stated that it was ruined the series till Abrams saved...............is he actually just trying to say he doesn't like Star Trek except for the last film?!?!

I think the guy is an idiot, sure TNG has its issues but it has so much that is good about it that it makes up for the moments where you cringe at the acting or the moral of the story.

Suffice it to say I like both my satire and my criticism to be a great deal more nuanced and intelligent than Cranky McCritic manages in this piece.
