Ten Forward Lounge - Miscellaneous General Chat & Welcome Thread

The birds around here are friendly, but the pigeons aren't always the smartest. A while back while I was walking in to work, there was a pigeon in front of me, and I just kept walking, assuming it was going to take off, but it never did, so I almost stepped on it.

I think stupidity is programmed into them. They have incredibly many chicks and if there weren't so many pigeons killed by their own intellectual deficiencies, we'd be wading hip-deep in them.
Btw, what is the difference between doves and pigeons? Both translate as the same word in my language and therefore I am unsure as to what difference the english-speaking nations make between both. There must be some, else there wouldn't be two words.

Just wondering if anyone out there is going to be taking there kids trick or treating? Or having them dress up in costumes? We went to some stores the other day, and there is always a ton of costumes and candy out. But there wasn't really any for adults. And the candy is not selling. Kind of sad really. I understand the COVID-19 is up in our area. But wondering if anyone else out there is able to do anything? I did some COVID-19 Pumpkins with masks this year :). My husband and I are still dressing up for Halloween. Going to a friends house. But that is all. We had planned on a Star Trek Halloween party, but not this year, maybe next year. The mini dress will just have to wait!

You could combine both and wear a TOS uniform. A dress can't get more mini than that, I think.

Trick or treating /Halloween isn't a custom in Bavaria. For us it's an ordinary day where we'll prepare for All Saints Day. We visit the graves of family and friends and decorate them with flowers or wreaths and candles. The Protestants celebrate the anniversary of Luther's 100 theses. For both groups it's a day of reflection and melancholy.

I bought Halloween candy but wasn’t sure what to expect. I put it in a bowl with a bottle of hand sanitizer on a little table on our sidewalk (we’re on a corner) and less than half of it was taken by the time it was dark. I could tell the volume of kids was waaaaay down.

I would be thrilled if Mr Kim would dress up with me. He never has and I’ve given up on it the last couple years. I hope you’ll be able to celebrate next year.

Yesterday, I wore a Cubs jersey to work. That's as close to a Halloween costume as I get.

(I'm not a Cubs fan but I like Wrigley Field very much and I freaking LOVE the city of Chicago)

We don't do Holloween, we only have adults in the house, and we don't pass out candy because it drives out dogs nuts when the kids come to the door.

Our volume seemed to be up. I wasn't sure how things were going to go: there seem to be more kids when it falls on a weekend, but of course this year had the pandemic thrown into the mix. I bought more candy than usual, just in case, and it turned out to be a good thing I did. We had very little left over.

Only 9 days till carnval starts. In Germany, it traditionally begins on Nov 11 at 11:11 :)
I'm not a fan of carnival itself but I enjoy the gazillions of different donut versions made specifically for that time of year. IMHO those filled with rosehip jam are best

these weeks get longer all the time. And weekends keep getting shorter. The climate change appears to result in a time change as well.

We're supposed to have a La Nina this year which means a milder winter. Definitely not going to be helped by climate change.

I’m glad to hear that. I took our leftover candy to the office because I didn’t want it in the house!

indeed! Hmm, my brother plays the keyboards and French horn, I play flutes, percussion and guitar and my sis plays guitar, bass, drums and sax - we could make our own band if we hadn't such different tastes in music. :D
I'm sorely tempted to buy myself a harp. My Christmas gratification is a little larger than usual and I've always wanted to learn that particular instrument. I'm thinking of a medium-sized one, a sort of bard-harp. Yes, I know, I'm a hopeless romantic :)
