Hello @Bekk Ishy Z , and welcome to the board! I hope you enjoy it here in our little corner of the internet! :)

I would probably second @Michael Two Wolves' recommendation, and take a look around the various forums, and see what interests you. You mentioned you come from a Star Wars background, so we do have a dedicated Star Wars subforum. And of course, we have a lot of forums for discussing the various aspects of Trek. There is one forum for each show, as well as individual forums for books, gaming, technology, etc. And if you want to discuss topics that cross over multiple Trek series (a discussion around Vulcans or Klingons, for example), then General Trek Discussion is the place!

I assume we still direct new members to the rules page when they sign up, but if not, you should probably give them a look. We have some rules that are different to how things operate on other forums (the "no resurrecting dead threads" rule is one I hear brought up a lot), so it's probably a good idea to be familiar with them.

Otherwise, just have fun and join in whatever conversations may interest you!

Oh, and one other thing I should mention, since we're in the middle of spooky month, a lot of us are using Halloween names right now, so don't be too surprised if a bunch of peoples' names change at the beginning of November!

I mean, Star Trek has a literal encyclopedia!

Yes, unfortunately I believe the version in the picture is now out of print, and it seemed to have a low print run, because it's difficult to find even second-hand. But previous versions seem to be much more available to buy second hand inexpensively.

Even that most recent version is from 2016, so it wouldn't include anything from streaming Trek. It will be interesting to see if they ever bother to revisit it. If not, I guess we're left with only Memory Alpha.

@Ghost in the Machine, I'm familiar with the rules like that. I've broken encountered enough at TF.N that I'm infamous, yet friends with, most of the mods. Hopefully I won't stress you guys out too much. Same interface, too.

Oh, and, the Halloween period at TF.N is called "sock hop" since people will usually use their socks to post. Good to go.

To the "encyclopedia" thing, I think Memory Alpha is the best thing for us. I love a good, physical book as much (or more) than the next guy, but we're not in the realm where it will take one year for a year to pass. We could have one show that takes place 10, 20, or even 50 years separated from another show presented within a few years.

Incidentally, years ago I was going through a church basement and found some encyclopedias from, I believe, the late 1800s. There was a section on naval vessels saying how many sails they carried and how many troops and how many cannons. I laughed with my friends that when asked about how many troops or guns it carried would say, "enough" simply so they don't give tactical info to the enemy.

My point is that in Trek you could have multiple ships of the same configuration meeting, like when the Enterprise met her sister ship in TNG. Sorry, don't recall the episode.

I'll check out the other forums in time. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Huh... no edit button? I meant to say, "I laughed with my friends that in today's encyclopedias when asked about how many troops or guns it carried would say, "enough" simply so they don't give tactical info to the enemy.

Don't worry, that's just a temporary thing. You should get the ability to edit your posts once you graduate from "Newbie" to "Red Shirt" status. :)

Welcome! Just relax and be yourself. This is a friendly board and the Lounges are the friendliest part of it. A good place to make friends and get to know each other.

I'm a SW fan myself but only as far as the 3 original episodes are concerned. What came afterwards is 100% commerce imo.
[ObiWan]These are not the episodes you're looking for...[/ObiWan]
But admittedly this might be a generational problem. I saw both Trek and Wars when they were shown for the very first time. For younger generations with different viewing habits it might be different - I find the newer SW movies and ST series way too hectic, too action-laden and overfraught with special effects. Too much brutality and too little philosophy for my taste. Alas, Doctor Who underwent the same decline. Propably a sign of the times.

That could also be said of Trek. I mean two movies of the Kelvin timeline had Kirk in a spacesuit hurtling through space to save the day. As my wife says, "What if the day doesn't want to be saved?"

There is only one Two Wolves (Niizh Ma’iingan), and he is me.

Now, shut up and pour. It’s too early for non-caffeinated conversations.
