Ten Forward Lounge - Miscellaneous General Chat & Welcome Thread

naah, not at all. I, too, feel extremely uncomfortable in crowds. I'm at my best, emotionally, when I am out in the country on my own :) This year I have 5 sites in the Bavarian Forest National Park to sample. YAY! I usually start work at 6 so that I get there before the tourists.
This is what it looks like there: (and that steep little creek at 0:50 is actually one of my sampling sites =), as is the bigger one in the following scene)

The broken trees are old images taken after a big storm we had 15 years ago. Insects and mushrooms are busy eating the stumps and old trunks up and a lovely young forest is now growing back :)

That looks so pretty right there! Very soothing, too. I basically have the Black Forest right in front of my doorstep. Should probably go there more often, but... here we go with the "there might be people there, oh noes" idea again, lol.

in that case, come to Eastern Bavaria =) The National Park is the biggest in Europe and since it was joined with the Czech Sumava-park you can cross the border and have a look at their side of the mountain range. Possibilities galore to avoid other humans. The tourist magnets are Mts Arber, Rachel, Lusen and Dreisessel. But Mt Osser is comperatively quiet and the surroundings of Mauth are definitely an insidet tip (quite flat in comparism, with moors and swamps and lots of fire salamanders =) )

Slightly off topic: You would be terrific at auctions, cause you don't get caught in the psychology bending of the extra entertainment before and after the event.

I have a one-track mind. If something isn't relevant to my interests aka Sir Patrick, I ignore it completely or forget about it. I forget where I've put my keys, I forget what I had for lunch, I forget where my shoes are - but I would never forget even the tiniest bit of Sir Patrick trivia. So yeah. If the auction was relevant to my interests I would NOT care about anything else surrounding it. ;)

I have never, not once, felt the desire to go to a con.

I don't much care for crowds either (except at a baseball game ;) ) and I hate it when some idiot in the crowd makes the actors feel uncomfortable with stupid questions. And I can't shake the feeling that some of the actors don't really want to be there anyway.

LOL that reminds me of a con with Armin Shimerman and his wife. When I coincidentially met them the next day he greeted me with "oh! you're the one with the intelligent questions!" *blush*
I'm in the habit of preparing for cons by searching the net for interviews with the respective actors. This way I know what has been asked before. I then make a list of different questions and if others at the con ask one of those, I tick them off my list. This way, when it's my turn, I can always offer a new (and hopefully interesting) question. I find it pays to prepare well. After all, there is so little time - it'd be a shame to waste any with old questions.
What I frequently ask is: how do you get into the character on set? The answers are very different:
Rene Oberjonois and Nana Visitor prefer(ed) to stay in character all day. When they had a break they imagined to be Odo/Kira waiting.
Armin Shimerman and Robert Picardo apparently have the ability to put their characters on and off like a glove. In Armin's case it propably helps that parallel to the TV work he does theater so that within a week he might have to play 3 or 4 characters.
Peter Wingfield makes playlists he thinks fit the respective characters and listens to that music before his scene comes up.
And it's rumoured that Johnny Depp takes his characters home and stays in his role all the time until the movie is finished. I imagine that must be extremely stressful for his family.

Hello everyone. Just joined these forums in order to discuss as much Star Trek as I possibly can. So far I've seen TNG (I wanted to get into Picard knowing everything that happened before), Discovery, Short Treks and TOS specially (and loving it). Next will deffinitely be DS9 for me.

Anyways, just a big hello to everyone and hope to have a great time here !

I have never, not once, felt the desire to go to a con.

I have nothing but the burning desire to go to a Star Trek con one day.

Then again, conventions are NOT what they were before. I can't stand doing lines when I have to submit papers to a government entity... why would I ever do a four-hour line in a gaming/tv/comic convention ?

Hello, @Highwayman667 , and welcome to the TrekBBS! I hope you enjoy yourself here!

As @auntiehill mentioned, we do have a "Ten Forward" welcome and general chat pinned at the top of the forum, so I'm just going to move your intro post there. I hope you don't mind.

Next will deffinitely be DS9 for me.

Ooohh, you're in for a treat! It starts out a little roughly, but stick with it, and it will all be worth it! :)

Queues at Star Trek conventions are not that long. Plus they have mechanisms to stop them being so.

Hello, everyone. I apparently joined the BBS in 2001 (denial, party of one...). I was active for many, many years before going into retirement in 2013 or so. I've occasionally lurked the board over the years but didn't post anything until about a week ago, after watching the premiere of PIC. With the franchise coming back to life in so many ways, it seemed like an interesting time to dust off my profile, jump back in, and try being an active member again. We'll see how it goes but I mostly just wanted to say "hello, again".

welcome back :) The name rings a bell but the avatar is new, I think. Cute =)
@avro: yes, that must have been why the name sounded so familiar. In my experience good intentions usually work. Problems arise when the environment works differently.

welcome back @Warp Coil good to have you back--

Fairy floss is a lovely name :) In my country (almost exactly opposite your place :D) we rather boringly call it sugar cotton.
Welcome to the board, @Ocanain :) There's a special thread where you'll find fellow Aussies: The Down Under Lounge. But there are also a lot of other interesting places on this board. Have fun exploring and please don't hesitate to ask if there's a problem. We're a crazy bunch but rather nice.
