Ted Sullivan DSC Insights on Twitter

It would no doubt be gratuitous fan-service, but I would have such a fan boner if an elderly Shran made an appearance.

Don't hold your breath about Shran. Jeffrey Combs has already said he's inquired about appearing on the show but they've turned him away in the interests of "breaking away from the other Treks."

How absurd. He has played a few characters on Trek, and could play a brand-spanking new one on Discovery. The man's a great actor! How about as one of the Saru species predators? Or Q, since he mentioned that.

Are you seriously asking why we updated the look from a cheap 60s show for a modern global audience? You do recognize this is a business as well as an art form, right?
Whereas I find that to be a garbage answer. No one is seriously saying that the sets should look cheap, but there's a huge difference between updating it and abandoning the aesthetic. They obviously know this to be true, as much of the show does keep a vague aesthetic connection to previous Treks. But any time something is called out for looking totally different it's the "TOS was cheap shit" excuse to the rescue.

The aesthetic looks cheap.

As if TOS was ever really that "cheap" by 60s standards. What an obnoxious response.

But then, the whole cycle of life will continue and not far from now, despite DSC being hideously expensive, it will be sneered at as "cheap blue Canadian shit" or somesuch. Hell, somebody's probably doing it right now.

I can't believe that this argument about the look of the show still persists.

The circular attack is getting old, ladies and gents.

"If you're going to say it's pre Kirk and Spock, it better look like The Cage, otherwise don't set it in that era...make it post-Nemesis"

Holy fuck, enough already. We get it. Fact is that it is what it is and it's not changing. Beating the dead horse for months now has GOT to be losing its fun and challenge for some of you. I mean, it has to be, right? Can't we complain about something else? I'm sure you could find something fresh and equally inane and immaterial to be dissatisfied with that would be new and at least interesting.

Here is the response to Ted's comment from a poster who apparently thinks the way you do:
Well Ted, let me disagree with cheap. I think for the 60s, for TV, for what was a niche TV program style, TOS had a decent budget. For the 60s. And I am in favor of respecting canon, including visual canon when possible. Though I do understand some of the changes.
Here is Ted's most appropriate response to this:
Talk to anyone associated with the show and you will hear about the tight budgets and “do more with less.” They were on the bubble from basically the moment they aired. Reused sets, costumes, models for that reason. Amazing what they did, but to claim otherwise isn’t accurate.
And to continue bludgeoning this dead horse, much of what is considered to be the TOS "asthetic" was based on the show's being produced in the 60's, including the color pallet, designed to attract color TV viewers, and the Fx, cause that was the best (60's) tech and budget allowed.

DSC, as has been mentioned pretty much everywhere hundreds of times, is not produced in the 60's so there is no reason for it to look that way. It is produced in 2017 and set in the current producer's vision of the 23rd century on a 2017 CBS budget.
