I freely admit, when it comes to the hardware of my computer, I'm stupid.

I recently bought a game, thinking my computer has everything it needs to run it. When I start the game, the screen just goes black. SO how do I go about determining which component(s) cause the game to fail?

Read the box.

Every game will tell you the minimum requirements.

Usually its the video card requirements that cause them to go belly-up, but since you didn't bother to tell us what game or what you have and we're not psychic....

Hm ...
First of all, check what are the system requirements for the game in question.
Search it up online if you can't find the manual.

Also ... keep in mind that regardless of what the 'minimum requirements' may be, over 90% of games have a tendency of actually working on computers that don't satisfy the minimum (they will run slowly with some potential graphical issues though).

However, if your system is relatively adequate (keep in mind it's the graphics card that's the most responsible for games) then my best suggestion would be to download latest drivers for your graphics card.

Also ... if you have a TV hooked up to your computer and a Clone mode enabled (or an equivalent) turn it off as it can mess with some games.

What's the game you are trying to run and what are your system specs?
