Teaser trailer: Canon or Metaphor?

Ummm , I think JJ knows were anal and he's gonna play us for all it's worth $$ . 1701.com . Sheesh. And you know , that's actually a good thing.

I don't think it's a metaphor. I think it's real, i.e. just as canon as anything else we've ever seen.

There is precisely zero onscreen evidence, i.e. proof, that the Enterprise was built in space. A lot of fans probably assumed it was, but that doesn't make it "real". Having the ship built on Earth would not violate a stitch of continuity.

Indeed, if you're looking for evidence, there's *more* evidence for having it built on Earth than anywhere else. Just look at the dedication plaque: "San Francisco".

I think in the final film it will be built in space (if you see such a scene)...not for canon as I dont give 2 hoots, but because it doesnt seem realistic to build such a big ship on the ground...that and the industrial feeling to it points towards a construction metaphor

I really dont get this obsession with having a spaceship built in space.

I never heard of any ocean liners being built in the ocean.

The analogy isn't quite fitting, since the question is whether the NCC-1701 is capable of flying in a planetary atmosphere - if it isn't, how do you get the ship into the orbit?

Enterprise didn't land on the surface though if I remember correctly. I'm not arguing with you about that (I don't have a firm grasp on TOS canon), just saying that that would be the problem of assembling the ship on earth.

It hasnt landed on the surface here either, its just being made there.

The ship could have major pieces built on earth, then lifted into orbit for final assembly.

Akiraprise, Space Janitor, Woulfe: Thanks for hi-jacking my thread.

Much appreciated, guys.

^ Sorry, after 3 polls in the same thread I thought we needed some humor to put it all into perpective....

What's a meta for ?

OK, I'm waiting for the answer....

As it was portrayed I doubt it was meant to be taken literally (as canon). Orci et al may have even realized they'd start a debate like this among the faithful.
Certainly, "Star Trek" is full of anachronisms, but even built on land I find it hard to swallow that a starship would be built in almost the same way a Liberty ship was assembled in 1944.

- The ship is real (I mean it's real in-universe).

- Even though the ship is the ship, the construction is a metaphor.

- It's just a teaser, so it can't be canon. Teasers are never canon (Think of all of the strange images we've seen in teaser trailers.)

Yummy! Pie! :p

But seriously...I don't necessarily think those shots will be in the film.

They are just trying to get some buzz going....and apparently, they are succeeding! :)

Wow, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who voted for "No Way. More Analysis is Required."

Ahem, on topic: yes, it is a metaphor. People, don't get your knickers in a twist. Really. It's just a teaser.
