Are you kidding right now? "Silly/ridiculous writing campaigns" brought Trek back in the form of TMP (originally Phase II) in the 70's and has been going (relatively) strong ever since with periodic ebbs and flows. New content is always either being shown or in some stage of production.

None of it would have happened without it. Unless you're okay with never having had any kind of Trek after TOS? If that's the case, then why are you on this forum making such patently absurd statements, as surely you never wanted TrekBBS to exist either, so we could have discussions about it?

I agree that's possible. I recall all the different conversations over fan writing campaigns over the years.

I think that if a fan is passionate about a specific project or aspect of Trek then it should be made known. Be it letter writing, email, online campaign or petition. As Nimoy said in ST 09 BTS, "God love em; the fans are great."

Fan participation in the franchise makes it more fun no matter the differences of opinions. I might not be fully wanting a Legacy series but I won't deny that many fans are interested in it. Star Trek Continues and Phase 2 showed a great interest by the fan community in the TOS era.

We might disagree on the execution but I would never deny fan interest as a real phenomenon.

Probably a "perfect storm" of events. People had been trying to get a new film or TV show of Star Trek going since the 60s. The show's popularity in syndication and mail from fans did not go unnoticed. By the time things got sorted, Star Wars happened which pushed Trek from TV to the theater.

There have been times when this place hasn't been very far off from mimicking that particular piece of entertainment.
Through the years, many of the denizens of the Trek BBS have been more than Hellish.

I finally read an article that helped me understand this somewhat; a Star Wars fan discussed why they kept trying out Star Wars even though they really had soured expectations post PT, and found a comment by Stephen King. Here's the quote:

Once King wrote about why he kept going to horror movies. He knew that almost every one of them was going to suck. Every time he walked into the theater he knew the movie would not only be a disappointment but a predictable, boring disappointment. So why did he keep going in? Why not just say, “Bah!”, wave his hands, and walk away?


The answer, he wrote, is that a handful of times in his life he had been scared witless by a good horror movie, and that even though such movies only seemed to come along once or twice a decade, he kept plunking down his eight bucks (did I mention that this column was written several years ago?) and getting his hopes up, on the off chance that this movie would be one of the handful that could really channel the magic.

Although I don't feel like upcoming Trek projects are for me, I'm still very ready to be surprised, as with Prodigy.

That was a lesson well learnt.
