TATV...what would have been really great to see

Trip's death would never have been handled well in any one-hour, abbreviated finale. If they were going to whack Trip all along, the least the Beebs could have done is pushed harder for a two-hour slot for "TATV" to allow the story to play out a little longer and perhaps make more sense. Invest more time and emotion into Trip's eventual passing near the end of the episode. More buildup with the jewel-seeking alien thieves being more menacing and a lot less one-dimensional and predictable.

I'm really liking the Reed idea. The more I think about it, the more sense it makes. I could imagine, in later (ha ha) seasons learning things about Reed's past, er, employment. And then, of course, the finale in season 6 or so where he turns up (dare I say it??) not dead!

But seriously, I think it would have been both emotional yet in character to see the security officer in this role. As long as the actual method of death were, say, a smidgen less ridiculous.

Now, see, THAT makes sense. TGTMD would have been really cool if it was a Reed book. He already had ties to Section 31, and it would have been a tad more logical to send an armoury officer on missions of espionage to the Romulan Empire than an engineer.

Then, as you said, he could turn up later, very much alive. Everyone would be happy

that malcoms death would be faked so he could help in other ways during the romulan war makes sense.
though cosnidering what they had to work with in tgtmd they did at least give a reason why not just an engineer but someone familar with overall warp and ftl theory was needed for that mission and not just another spy.

How about if the finale had Kirk and Spock, post-TUC, pre-GEN?

They tried repeatedly to get Shatner on the show. Nobody could reach an agreement on whose story idea to use... plus money may have been an issue. It's sad that may have been his last chance to be involved onscreen. Having a TOS cast guest shot would've fitted Season 4 perfectly. Much better promotional value than welcoming Frakes & Sirtis back. Plus the TNG card had already been played with Brent Spiner at the start of the season.

For me, the ENT cast having their finale all to themselves was the ideal... but somebody from the original show would be fitting, bringing it all full circle.

I ask because despite Trip's dramatic growth as a character throughout seasons 3 and 4, he did regress quite a bit in your TATV script, to the point that I actually had to wonder if you watched Enterprise at all after "Bounty."

I watched Enterprise all the way through in the (mostly vain) hope that it would improve.

Trip did NOT grow as a character during seasons 3 and 4. Granted, his sister died in that Xindi mess, but all it did was give him oppourtunities to bitch uselessly about something else........

I do think that Reed would have been better. But really, there was no need for a death, especially in such a half-assed manner. It would have been great to see a finale with closure.

Except not killing Reed. Trip was fine.

Reed should have been Archer and T'Pol's third friend.

The finale should have been two hours. Even shitty scripts come off a little better if there's more time to give characters stuff to do.
"TATV" failed all-around. Not long enough. An awful way to kill off a beloved leading character. No real tension was built. Ick.
