Tasha

I didn't reaolize she chose to leave... I agree she was painful to watch but I feel her character was getting better ... slightly.

A little off topic but why did Gates (Dr. Crusher) leave for one season was it planned was she prego?

Not that I know of. She DID find out she was pregnant during the filming for "Remember Me", which iroinically involved some jumping around and so on.

The season two Gates thing has always been a bit of a mystery!

I remember an interview I read, where Denise Crosby said that if she'd had more scenes like the one with Worf at the start of "Skin of Evil" she might not have chosen to leave.

If she had gotten the role she originally went in for TNG would still have had a female Security Chief but lost its therapist.

The bigger question is: Did Star Trek miss her? And the proper answer is: Not for a second. She was downright painful to watch, even during her turn in Yesterday's Enterprise.

I can never understand this attitude to Denise Crosby. I really liked her a lot and could not find fault with her acting. I was sorry when she left and I still get upset when I watch Skin of Evil

I would rather scoop my eyeballs out with a rusty spoon than watch her act. Too bad Skin of Evil wasn't ten to twelve episodes earlier.

Hmmm. Not all that keen then eh?

I'm glad Pulaski didn't return, I thought she was awful. If they'd had Selar as the new CMO I'd have been happy.

I liked Yar in S1 and was sad to see her leave as well. As for her being painful to watch, they all were at times IMO:
Picard - Came off as very wooden
Riker - Didn't seem comfortable (but then again who would be in spandex all day long?)
Data - Very robotic to the point it just got annoying
Crusher - She was generally alright I found
Troi - Always seemed to be on the verge of tears
Yar - Came off as a little stiff
La Forge - Like Crusher he was generally alright
Worf - Very stereotypically Klingon
Wesley - Annoyed the hell out of me

Ah well, that's that lot taken care of. Next!

I'd never noticed her being a bad actress, but I'm a poor judge of things like that. I agree that her staying would've curbed Worf's development as a character.

I've always had mixed feelings about Yar. On the one hand she wasn't that stellar in S1, but she was great in Yesterday's Enterprise and as Sela and she probably would've gotten better (like EVERYONE did...even Troi and Wesley, eventually). But at the same time, I have to wonder if Worf's growth as a character might have been a bit stunted with her there.

Even MORE of a reason to keep Tash in, then!

I LOATHE One Note Worf. "I am in the Federation.....No wait a minute my loyalty is to the Empire......No I am a Federation officer.......No I want to be with my people....."

God DAMN.

Pick a side and stick with it!!!

In real life, people often don't. They're CONFLICTED.

I really don't see how though.

Worf's development was more on the fact that he was a Klingon (and an orphan) in Starfleet, not that he was Security Chief. I think he would have developed just as well at the Conn.

I'd love to have seen Tasha and Ishara against each other when the Enterprise went to her homeworld. There was a lot they could have done with the character.

But that's just my opinion. Guess we'll never know.

Let's face it, while Denise Crosby isn't the best actress, the writers REALLY let her down in season 1. Just listen to her lines. They're atrocious. She was never shown as a true security chief. Just look at Code of Honour for goodness sake. They implied that she was attracted to her kidnapper! Yikes!

As an aside, I wish they brought back Sela in one of the later seasons. The Romulans were kind of dropped.

Completely understood. I just remember Worf going BACK AND FORTH so many times it became a running joke with myself and friends that watched TNG/DS9 back then. Plus, as I stated, I REALLY do not like the character so, you know, any excuse to bag on him.

Denise Crosby is just a plain bad actress. This just isn't a comment on her work on Star Trek: The Next Generation, this is a comment about her work in general.

It seems Roddenberry cast her more for her body (guy has to have priorities) than any actual skill she had as an actress. YMMV.

To quote George Bluth from Arrested Development, "Pop-pop horny".

Thank you! Denise Crosby really does my head in. The bottom line is that she bailed out of TNG after one season, then when her movie career went nowhere she tried to get back into TNG. She didnt even give it a chance, I wouldnt have minded Patrick Stewart quitting after the third season, because at least he would have given it a good try. I remember when I watched 'Trekkies', everytime the camera showed peoples art of Star Trek characters, there would always be one of Yar, even though shes one of the least liked trek characters of all time. Then when someone mentioned 'Yesterday's Enterprise', she immediately rushed out 'yeah I had to quit Star Trek to get the best episode'. The way she said best episode seemed to suggest that she was behind it all.

Her appearance in that episode was ok, but I was frustrated by the others, it just felt like a really forced twist to have her keep popping up. On Memory Alpha it says:

"Sela was devised and played by Denise Crosby. In devising the role, Crosby stated, "the part of Sela sort of came about from me sitting around in my house one day thinking about how much fun it was for me to go back and do "Yesterday's Enterprise", and it was so much fun that I thought what else can I do? I thought it was pretty well established that Lt. Yar and Lt. Castillo on "Yesterday's Enterprise" had something going so perhaps they had a child or Yar was pregnant when she went back into the past to fight her final battle. And I sort of thought it out and it seemed to really make sense, and there were no flaws."

Im not really a cynic, but I think its a lot more probable that Crosby was just sitting round the house thinking 'How can I get back on Star Trek?' Similiarly for 'Nemesis':

'Reportedly, Denise Crosby wanted to appear in this film as her recurring TNG character Sela, but was told by Rick Berman that it would not fit with the story'

A rare moment of clarity for Rick Berman. Again, this was not Crosby thinking of how she could improve the story, this was just her trying to get back into TNG. Unprofessional to leave so soon, unprofessional the keep trying to come back. BAH!

I always have a hard time believing people don't regret leaving Star Trek, especially when they do a great job in a role, but I suppose some people do have other things on their mind.

I seem to recall an interview where Muldaur reflected that she always felt like an outsider on TNG. That the cast was still reeling from McFadden's firing and had never warmed to the replacement.

If they'd had Selar as the new CMO I'd have been happy.

That probably would mean someone else would have played K'Ehleyr. Suzie Plakson delievered well when she played K'Ehleyr.

Well, K'Ehleyr would never had happened. The intention of writer Tracy Torme was that, after three or so episodes of Worf reporting to sickbay to have his mysterious courtship injuries treated, there would be a big reveal that Selar was his new partner.

I like the idea of Tasha a lot more than the reality of her. I think that's down to poor writing and Denise Crosby's acting. I wish that they'd made a better job of the character of Tasha and that she'd stayed. On the other hand, I'm not sure that Worf would have developed, and we got some good stuff out of his character.

Now that's a great way of putting it. Even though I don't think Crosby was that bad, I certainly agree that she would have improved over time along with the rest of the cast. Quite frankly I would have rather seen Sirtis go than Crosby.

And she's spot on about her Skin of Evil lines. That was (unfortunately) her greatest moment on the show.

I think Crosby made a bad decision... leaving so early on in the series run. I'm sure the character would have been developed further as the seasons went on, but I agree with what others have said here, doing that might have reduced Worf's role and he was a much more interesting character.

Originally Crosby audition for the role of Troi. They brought in Marina Sirtis to read for Yar since Tasha was supposed to be a rip off of the Vasquez character from Aliens. Her original name was actually "Macha Hernandez". GR switched the roles IIRC.

The last I saw of Denise was in a one-line guest spot on Mad Men where she played an old lady horse trainer.

Gates McFadden was fired because then producer Maurice Hurley didn't get along with her and because he didn't like Crusher's development during the first season. Rick Berman admits that it was a mistake to let her go (an interview with him where he says this is on youtube ) Berman was a big supporter of Gates and asked her to return for the third year when Muldaur didn't work out character wise. I bet they had to be ready to pay her a good chunk more when they made that phone call.

As described in the character bios the actors were sent to audition for, Deanna Troi was supposed to be tall, willowy, fair, with her alienness suggested by gesture and voice, and Macha Hernandez was small, dark, muscly with a Jeanette Goldstein-like quality. During the casting process, they switched Crosby and Sirtis - and renamed Macha as "Tasha Yar" because they thought it suited Crosby's colouring better.

The empathic Troi was essentially a Deltan with hair (based on Ilia from "Phase II", of course) and, ironically, "Tasha" was the original name for the scripted V'ger Probe of the opening episode of "Phase II". The Probe had a pearlescent quality and reminded Security Chief Chekov of his Aunt Tasha's pearl ring. Later, when the Probe returned and took Ilia's form, the Tasha name stuck. When Ilia is restored to life at the end of "In Thy Image", Tasha reverts to a small, burnt-out gadget they find lying on the ground.

But they were all a little cheesy at first. Troi sounding like she's having a baby everytime they encounter a new alien. Riker being so earnest and over-eager. Worf, so quiet and shy unless he had to growl. Tasha was hard to watch but they all were, except for Data and Picard

Tasha did suck as a Romulan in the episode w/ Spock.
