"Skin of Evil" is on right now here in the UK.

It made me wonder whether Denise Crosby ever regretted leaving TNG before the end of Season, because Yar hadn't been developed. But then again most of S1 was pretty poor IMHO. She could have stuck it out for another year at least.

IIRC, she actually said she regretted her decision at some point. No surprise there really, as her post-TNG movie career certainly didn't turn out the way she had hoped ;)

The bigger question is: Did Star Trek miss her? And the proper answer is: Not for a second. She was downright painful to watch, even during her turn in Yesterday's Enterprise.

I was surprised to see her in Deep Impact playing a mother, she looked a lot older than she did when she played Tasha and it wasn't that many years between roles.

I've always had mixed feelings about Yar. On the one hand she wasn't that stellar in S1, but she was great in Yesterday's Enterprise and as Sela and she probably would've gotten better (like EVERYONE did...even Troi and Wesley, eventually). But at the same time, I have to wonder if Worf's growth as a character might have been a bit stunted with her there.

Denise Crosby is beautiful. What's funny is when I was a lad, I thought she was plain; I know, I know, I'm an idiot. Which I am. Ironic, cause that was probably her view of life too; as a grandaughter of Bing Crosby (from wikipedia anyway), she may have taken the limelight for granted. Reminds me of Captain Panaka in Phantom Menace (Hugh Quarshie) He finally came out of hiding with similar regrets at a Convention interview a couple years (force.net) back saying he'd love to be in a new Star Wars TV show, after casually kissing off an offer for Ep. 2, Attack of the Clones. As dissapointing as Ep. 1 might have been, how dumb do you have to be to turn down a gig like that? I guess when we're young and cocky, we don't realize what we got until it's gone, to quote the great Cinderella. But, it made perfect sense that Padme would replace her head of security ten years out; so no harm, no foul for continuity. Truth matched fiction; Panaka seemed angry anyway; kind of like Yar.

Yar's early departure did one thing; took some heat off the old red shirt criticism; a main character can die. I love Yar now, partly out of nostalgia, but consider her character's funeral a defining moment for the show. A moment that told the audience that this version of Trek was going to take more time for characterization, drama and exposition concerning the human condition. And the reality of the actor's behind the scene's drama makes it all the more poignant, culminating in her hosting of Trekkies; seeing Trek, ironically, for the first time. She was fitting to host that documentary, a guide to newbies, and like them an outsider to the world of Star Trek.

I didn't reaolize she chose to leave... I agree she was painful to watch but I feel her character was getting better ... slightly.

A little off topic but why did Gates (Dr. Crusher) leave for one season was it planned was she prego?

I can never understand this attitude to Denise Crosby. I really liked her a lot and could not find fault with her acting. I was sorry when she left and I still get upset when I watch Skin of Evil

I would rather scoop my eyeballs out with a rusty spoon than watch her act. Too bad Skin of Evil wasn't ten to twelve episodes earlier.

She was so pleased by the lines written for her in "Skin of Evil" that she said, "If all the scripts were this good, I never would have left".

To be fair to Denise Crosby, she must have been incredibly disappointed that her promised role didn't materialize. Like the introduction of the MACOs in "Enterprise", Yar was supposed to have been in charge of Away Teams. When Riker took away teams down to a new planet, Yar was supposed to be doing all the orders and security strategizing, but, as written, she was mostly delivering the hackneyed "Hailing frequencies open" lines that Uhura had done in TOS.

Gates McFadden didn't find out she was pregnant until after doing her own stuntwork in "Remember Me", IIRC. She then had to disguise her pregnancy with longer and longer lab coats.

Supposedly, Gene Roddenberry was displeased with the development of Crusher in Season One. Beverly and (the female) Lesley Crusher were essentially creations of David Gerrold, who'd already had a major falling out with GR, and no one - except Patrick Stewart and Gates McFadden - was all that impressed with the mutual romantic interest subplot. One of Crusher's best episodes would have been Gerrold's "Blood and Fire", which was canned.

It was decided not to renew McFadden's contract. I recall Richard Arnold saying at a convention at the time that the producers felt that Crusher had become "a whiner" and, to complicate matters, the actress's red hair refused to hold its style under the hot lights and she was constantly being sent back to Hairdressing to have her hair washed and reset to match continuity. Dr Crusher was costing the production time and money, and it was causing much friction on the set, in addition to arguments about the Picard/Crusher dynamic.

Additionally, McFadden has since said there was some sexual(?) harrassment from someone high up on the production team. She clashed with Maurice Hurley, and there was pressure to have the character replaced. Eventually, GR pushed to have his old friend Diana Muldaur come in to play a female version of McCoy. Tracy Torme had pushed for an alien doctor, hence the appearance of Selar in Season Two.

When Muldaur (who did not have the standard five-year contract), said she'd be unavailable for the first four episodes of Season Three (to star in "The Return of McCloud" reunion telemovie), it was realised the most efficient way to resolve the problem was to bring back McFadden - Maurice Hurley had already departed - and they bought in a selection of different, very expensive, red wigs, thus resolving another problem that had caused the most annoying of the production delays surround the Crusher character in Season One.

^ Very interesting, I didn't know a lot about the Gates McFadden issues. Thanks for sharing, Therin :techman:

I'm glad Pulaski didn't return, I thought she was awful. If they'd had Selar as the new CMO I'd have been happy.

I liked Yar in S1 and was sad to see her leave as well. As for her being painful to watch, they all were at times IMO:
Picard - Came off as very wooden
Riker - Didn't seem comfortable (but then again who would be in spandex all day long?)
Data - Very robotic to the point it just got annoying
Crusher - She was generally alright I found
Troi - Always seemed to be on the verge of tears
Yar - Came off as a little stiff
La Forge - Like Crusher he was generally alright
Worf - Very stereotypically Klingon
Wesley - Annoyed the hell out of me

They all grew into their roles as they got more familiar with them and the writers developed the characters. Yar would have been the same. As for Worf, well when Geordi went down to the engine room, he would have gone to the Conn full-time. From there he could provide a little extra muscle on away missions if needed and cover for Data when he was off the ship. It would also mean that all the fully-trained and qualified Conn Officers wouldn't be kept from the bridge by a child!

Denise Crosby is just a plain bad actress. This just isn't a comment on her work on Star Trek: The Next Generation, this is a comment about her work in general.

It seems Roddenberry cast her more for her body (guy has to have priorities) than any actual skill she had as an actress. YMMV.

To quote George Bluth from Arrested Development, "Pop-pop horny".

So then I have to ask, did Diana Muldaur regret not coming back? Because I certainly regret it.

No, because on the strength of Pulaski, and then free to take new offers after the "McCloud" telemovie was completed, she was offered another strong, critically-acclaimed role: Rosalind Shay in "LA Law"!

In an interview with Starlog, just as she'd taken on the Pulaski role, Muldaur described how she and her husband had just moved away from Hollywood to retire - and GR rang her. She turned him down a few times, but he said he was desperately in need of her talents. She only did Pulaski because she and GR were very good friends.

L.A. Law-- is that the one where she fell down the elevator shaft?

I always have a hard time believing people don't regret leaving Star Trek, especially when they do a great job in a role, but I suppose some people do have other things on their mind.

If they'd had Selar as the new CMO I'd have been happy.

Well now, I'd have been happy with that too!

Even MORE of a reason to keep Tash in, then!

I LOATHE One Note Worf. "I am in the Federation.....No wait a minute my loyalty is to the Empire......No I am a Federation officer.......No I want to be with my people....."

God DAMN.

Pick a side and stick with it!!!
