TAS made real....

Not sure what else to add. I've tried to use one of the greys used on the 11 footer Enterprise as the overall colour with some of the accent greys also used. I tried to match the copper colour of the deflector as well as the dark redish colour of the nacelle domes for 1st and 2nd pilot versions of the TOS E. On the nacelle support pylons I also tried a similar cyan blue as the dorsal of the 1st pilot Enterprise. Finally I added port and starboard running lights as well as a white bow light.

Great job! This is inspiring me to finish up my model of the Antares we saw in TOS-R.

This is the drawing from the Official Guide To The Animated Series in reference to Carter Winston's ship in "The Survivor." It sport one nacelle rather than two. It somewhat resemblances what we actually saw briefly onscreen so matbe this was a conceptual drawing but not finalized.

I recall this design from the old Star Trek Concordance, but I don't recall what episode it's from. I thought it was the survey ship Ariel, but I could be wrong.

I like the bottom image much better, but even so there is not a lot of detail to these ships leaving lots of room for interpretation and improvisation.

I think that lower image was supposed to be Zephram Cochrane's scout ship... I don't think it was ever seen onscreen in any episode.

What I find interesting is that it almost looks like it might have been the inspiration for the SS Conestoga from Enterprise. They share some design parallels …

^^ I look at that and I see the Star Wars-ification of Trek. In TMP the refit E was more detailed (maybe too much so), but it still had a sleekish look to it. But over time the look from the two franchises became interchangeable. Even the way the ships maneuver in space became interchangeable—combating starships supposedly moving at tens of thousands of kilometres pre hour or even FTL are seen right on top of each other and move like dogfighting aircraft.

I suppose thats part of why I try to make my Trek ships with the TOS aesthetic and minimize the kind of detail seen in later productions—it harkens back to when Trek had a more distinct identity and its own way of doing things. It’s why I was put off by a lot of what they did in TOS-R resulting in something that never would have been seen in TOS even if they had had plenty of time and a generous budget because the resources available and their perspective was so different than today.

And on this very board, over the years, we have seen fans create fantastic looking versions of TOS era ships that correct some of the production compromises of the originals and yet still look like they would fit seamlessly alongside the live-action TOS footage. THATS how TOS-R could have and should have been done as it would have shown a genuine respect for the original creativity.

...Okay, thats my rant for the day. Back to our regularly scheduled programming.

You can blame ILM and Image-G for that, starting with the Reliant in TWOK. They loved to over-greeble their filming miniatures. The areas above and beneath the Reliant's shuttlebays, as well as the absurdly cavernous secondary hull cargo bay (read: waste of empty space) in the Excelsior are prime examples. All Trek ships have been that way pretty much since then. Except for the Grissom and other Oberth-style ships, however. For some reason that one was left quite a minimalist design.

According to the site Ex Astris Scientia, that lower design might be what we see the nose of in the wide angle hanger deck shot in "Mudds' Passion".

Scroll down to Starfleet Shuttles, it's the third entry under that.

Is it maybe in the Animated series book like other sketches seen in this thread previously? I first saw the design in a blueprints book before I got my copy of the Concordance.

In any event, I'd like to see a 3D model done up if at all possible please, @Warped9! Cyrano Jones' ship looks cool, this would too! :)

The "egg" or "computer mouse" shaped craft appeared in the mid 70s "Star Trek Concordance" written by Bjo Trimble and published by Ballentine. That volume featured several illustrations in the Filmation style that never made it to the final broadcast cuts. One depicted Spock as a child wearing a harlequin type bodysuit leaning against his pet sehlat (rather than the "Astro Boy" ensemble shown on NBC). Another showed a Kzin in a pressure suit with a far more stocky, "bear" like physique instead of the "skinny Minnies" we actually saw on TV.

I will admit I've always been rather fond of that compact, economical structure.

Well, I’m working on the egg ship. I figure it’s a somewhat ovoid shape with a collar around it, but lots of missing detail—leaving me room for interpretation and tweaking.

Sweet! It will prove fascinating what "personal aspects" you bring to the concept!

Very interesting. And I've also been fond of this little design.:cool::cool::cool:

Agreed. Great news!:cool::cool::cool::cool:

A beginning. First pass at this and I'm not completely sure I will stick with this version. I want to explore an alternative take before committing to fleshing out one or the other.

Why do I get the feeling this is going to be one of those shapes that won't translate from the drawing to the 3D the way my eye thinks it should?

I think it's that the view from underneath makes it look more flared out bow to stern? I wish I could find the schematics I had, but I think I don't have the book it was in anymore! Think it was one of the early 'Xeroxed look' publications? Its not in the Federation Reference series books 1-6, I still have those. I'm going to see if I can find it online in the Schematics database site. :)

Yep, that’s definitely the one. It’s probably the best schematics ever made for it. A reasonably good job trying to reconcile the artwork in a more technical form.

Agreed! This is why I liked the design.:cool::cool::cool: I think I even used it in one of our FASA Trek RPG games, many years ago! :)

I can't find a credit for it. The Schematics 'Biblography' link in the 'Small Craft' table lists "More Tribbles, More Troubles", but that's not right! :)
