Tales of the Tardis

A fan mentioned how Fourteen might have awakened Sutekh, because of a side trip he took with Rose after the events of the Giggle, as he said.
Or more likely it's the terrible thing The Fourteenth Doctor by visiting the very edge of the universe in "Wild Blue Yonder." That caused the return of The Toymaker, so why not also Sutekh?

Most of those updated FX seem unnecessary to me. The original shots may have been old-fashioned, but the only real flaws were the lack of match-moving of the apocalyptic background outside the TARDIS doors and the visible wires on the shot of the cylinder in the corridor. And the original time corridor effect may have been cruder, but it was more distinctive than the generic swirly clouds of the replacement effect.

Yeah, but you and I lived through the disco era. Kids today don't appreciate disco balls as much as we did. They need the "flashy-flashys" and the "swirly-swirlys" or their attention drops off and they lose interest. ;)

I am, of course, just being silly and facetious. Although, I do understand why they would want to update the effects in this particular instance, as they were tieing it into the current episode. As long as they don't do it to the episode proper, I'm cool with it. Speaking for myself, the only change that I would have requested is the removal of "Sutekh's Hand of Doom", and they did that, so I'm happy.:)

I didn't live through the 1940s, but I still like black-and-white cinematography. I didn't live during the 11th century, but I have no desire to see the Bayeux Tapestry replaced with photorealistic CGI. I'm not so narrow-minded that I can only appreciate things from my own lifetime, and I would rather not see a production pander to people who are that narrow-minded.

That's a fair point. Still, it does suggest that modern CGI effects design tends to have a certain sameness to it, while older things could be more creative. There are just way too many swirly clouds in modern FX. Those kaleidoscope blocks of color in the original time-vortex may have been cheesier-looking, but they were more vivid and visually interesting.

Honestly, I'm more bothered by the changes to exterior shots, the regular dodgy effects (especially the fire), and worst of all, replacing the old TARDIS props! That's part of the charm of classic  Who after all! I don't mind the smaller touches that sharpen some of the shots of Scarman and such, but leave big dodgy effects alone!

I'm also severely disappointed by the removal of the Hand of Sutekh.

(Dead serious)

...but I also agree that replacing the disco lights with the modern time vortex effect is unnecessary.

I AM surprised they altered the devastated Earth seen through the TARDIS doors given it didn't look "improved" upon the original 70s tabletop miniature, just a different configuration to the cliffs.

Since we still have the original effects readily accessible through various media, the changes don't bother me in the same way or extent as the modifications to the SW films with the attempt to "sweep the original cuts under the carpet".

One change I confess I like not yet mentioned is the height and proportions to the "creature" head revealed when the mask/helmet vanishes. The neck is not quite as long so the head sits a tad lower. Plus, I think it is ever so slightly wider, just a "hair", but enough that it just looks more balanced and proportional with the pectoral collar and robes Sutekh wears. However, since they went that route, I am surprised they didn't have the new head move a smidge like the original did, implying he was actually talking.

Apropos of nothing, but seeing Sutekh in the season finale with a clearly more Anubis inspired design just, well...it kinda' bugs me. Sutekh (Set, Seth, whatever) is a god totally separate from Anubis, what he represented, , his actions, how he looked. He possessed a curved "snoot" and clipped, squared off ears. To this day experts still can't agree what Set was meant to resemble (when the rest of the pantheon had rather obvious inspirations), but it certainly was not a wild dog or jackal. Taking the piss out of the drama, I can imagine the Doctor addressing Sutekh about his change in appearance and the Osiran confessing that his helmet of imprisonment was ill fitting, squishing his "nose" out of alignment for several thousand years It took awhile for it to finally pop back into shape.

Yeah, the depiction of Sutekh in modern Who bothered me, too, for exactly those reasons. It's a minor complaint which is why I forgot to mention it in my lengthy review. Still, it's a sloppy mistake that they probably didn't care about to note the difference.
