Taken the Limey

I recently watched TAKEN, a great revenge movie. But while watching it, I couldn't help but reminded of an older movie called the Limey with Terrence Stamp as the revenging father. I think TAKEN is the better of the two movies. Limey is too much talking and cluttered with too much flash backs...but its a good movie in its own way...

I have always been a fan of Mr.Stamps. He is a good actor, though some of his movie choices are quite interesting.

He was great as ZOD in the superman movies. And I liked him in BOWFINGER too...And he is actually quite good in THE LIMEY. But ZOD is what I remember him most from...

The British Royal and Merchant Navies back in the 19th century used to provide sailors with lime juice as it is somewhat effective in preventing scurvy. Not as effective as orange juice but limes were more readily available since limes were procured from Britain's Caribbean colonies. The inhabitants of those colonies began referring to Brits as "limeys" and it stuck.

I miss my old third year history class at school.

Once there were exams at the end of it (4th and 5th years) it wasn't as interesting.

Taken was fun, but the Limey is high art by comparison. A much better film.

The Limey is about the Limey. The revenge is just a framing device to tell the story of a man who's lost his only valuable connection to the world outside of prison and as he struggles to avenge her, he realizes he never really knew her.

Taken is straightforward about a guy doing whatever it takes to get his daughter back. It's not even a revenge film, it's a rescue film. And it substitutes "talking" for shorthand bullshit like him getting his daughter a shitty radio for her birthday, then her stepdad gets her a horse. That was laughable. Once he gave his awesome "Special Set of Skills" speech, the movie finally got going. But it was nothing more than entertainment, which isn't a strike against it, but since they had very different agendas, I don't think it can be compared to The Limey.

Sorry, but the Limey is not as watchable as Taken. Its more raw, and thus I guess more realistic. But Taken, IMO, is the better movie because it is, gasp, more entertaining.

High art movies are over-rated air baloons. MILK was last year's over-rated 'art' film IMO...(Ducking as sulu draws his phaser)

I'm not saying one is more watchable than the other. Again, they're very different movies which have different agendas and therefore are watchable by different people in different moods. And I personally think The Limey is more rewarding because I walked away from it affected by the story, haunted by Terrence Stamp's loneliness and disatisfaction. And ten years later, The Limey is generally well remembered and regarded as a good film.

Taken was fun to watch, but really not that memorable. I doubt it'll even be remembered when people around these parts start creating "Best of the Year" posts in December.

Milk wasn't an art film at all. It was a biopic. And it was epic. Art films or indie films are usually defined by having small personal stories. Milk was about a guy who started a movement. That's big.
