Taika Waititi to write and direct Thor 4

I would never defend Eternals, I thought it was extremely boring and I'd never watch it again, I thyink that it definitely deserved its Rotten rating. I didn't hate it like I hated Ant-Man & The Wasp, or dislike it as much as Spider-Man Homecoming, but its definitely one of the few MCU films I'd consider outright bad, and I say that as someone who thinks Thor 2 is decent.

Beh, I LIKED Eternals for being something new and not like the other movies.

I mean, being boring, listless, poorly thought out, completely pretentious and badly shot is somewhat unique compared to most MCU films, I guess  Unfortunately, it has to share being horribly paced and having absolutely terrible villains with a few other MCU films.

In my opinion it was a bad movie that tried to mix art house crap with an MCU film, in what feels like a really obvious "maybe if we make an artsy Marvel movie, it might have a chance at a "serious" award" attempt. It bit them in the ass critically and probably commercially (it beat its budget, but with marketing cost and the terrible reception I don't think it can be counted as a win), so hopefully they've learned their lesson from it. We'll definitely see the Black Knight and probably a few Eternals show up in other projects, but I seriously doubt we'll have to suffer through an Eternals 2, or any more art house directors being allowed to do MCU films, at least with the same level of control.

I used to go to opening night preview showing for all MCU movies, but the combination of covid, the crowds and the fact that I'm not as young as I used to be keep me from doing it anymore.

My opinion is always to go opening day - which here is a Thursday. Got to see a later session today. Probably a B or B+

We're talking about Eternals, not "Joker".

Most folks who went to watch it for free on Disney + said they didn't get why people kept saying it was a terrible movie.

Boy do I feel foolish. Don't get me wrong I still stand by my comments that there's nothing wrong with a film being good instead of great but this isn't even good. From the endless unfunny jokes, to Russell Crowe's comedy Italian accent, to a climax do cringeworthy I wouldn't have minded if my seat had opened up to swallow me at several points, the only remotely positive thing I can say about it is that I'm glad so much was (quite obviously) cut out that it runs to well under two hours not including the credits which I did not stay for.

I thought he was trying a Greek accent?

With the percentage of comic book movies being comedies rising, and the quality of these comedies dropping I will amend a statement I previously made. I thought that the golden age of comic book movies was beginning to end. It's not. It's already over.

Films have to earn back more than twice their official budgets to actually be profitable. And given Marvel spends a lot on marketing, they're looking for at least 3x to 4x that number.

Eternals lost money.

Yep, and important to remember box office is always reported in gross terms. That's the money in the cinema's till.

From that, the cinema takes their (actually rather small cut, considering), the distributor takes their's, the advertising needs to be covered, there's tax (at several stages, I think).

That box office gross becomes a net, which is the gross of the next stage, which becomes itself a net and so on. There's a really interesting quick guide at this link, though you could do doctorates in this stuff.

I was hoping to see this yesterday but we only do matinee's and all of the good seats were already taken by the morning, and I checked again today and ran into the same problem. So hopefully we'll get to it tomorrow or Monday. I'm also trying to go to a showing in one of the huge two huge screens in theater, so that limits things a bit. Our theater has three different sizes of auditorums and screens, from the two huge ones right in the front to some tiny one probably about half to a third the size of the huge ones, way in the back.
I'm also hoping to find a showing late enough I can do my morning bike ride before we go, but I'm willing to give that up if I have to.
I'm still shocked to see how bad of a reception The Eternals got, I really liked it, and I think my mom said it was one of her favorite MCU movies.

I really liked Eternals too. (We just watched it a few days ago on D+.) My son was neutral about it, but he's a pretty tough critic and didn't find a lot to dislike here, so that's actually a pretty good rating from him. He thinks it might be the "odd" pacing that sets it apart from other Marvel movies and maybe makes people uncomfortable/dislike it.

Yep. And that's why a film needs to make back 2 to 3 times its reported budget to be profitable. Whatever its creative merits, Eternals was a box office flop.

Love to know your opinion…Has the genre “jumped the shark” or is it just a weakness of taika?

I’m not a good judge, my son is a huge fan and has been disappointed in the movies for a while now.

Personally? I think the genre as currently constituted has jumped the shark.

There may still be some good movies, and more good moments in movies, but the golden era as we know it has passed.

Studio executives will keep insisting that they be churned out, but what will be really interesting to see is if creatives can make the next incarnation interesting in a new way.

The golden era has passed because all the good characters have had their stories done. If they normalize regular reboots and recastings (like the comics where stories get rebooted and appearances change regularly) then they can keep it going for a while longer.

EDIT: We still have MCU X-Men and F4 to look forward to also, so those can be some great movies if done right.
