I know the tabletop RPG industry is pretty much on life support right now, but has there even been a RUMOR of anyone producing a new tabletop RPG for Star Trek? I know Wizkids is doing the click minis and a board game, but I haven't heard anyone making plans to reintroduce a good old pencil and paper RPG yet. Just curious.

Also curious, would anyone give a damn if they did release it? Aside from me, I mean.

    Not a whisper on RPG.net.

Maybe. Especially if it was mechanically innovative, like Smallville. Come to think of it, given what they did do with Smallville, Leverage, Supernatural, and Firefly, I'd love to see what MWP might come up with for a Trek RPG. And as their catalogue shows, they seem to like licenses.

I expect the license fees for Trek would be too much for them, though.

I did play their BSG, Firefly, and Leverage games and I do think Chambers is a pretty solid designer, though not amazing. I'd like to see what he could do with Trek, but I think you're probably right - it's a bit beyond MWP's ability to pay for it.

Oh yeah, I have all of the TFG/Amarillo press stuff, all of the FASA stuff, all the LUG and Decipher stuff. I was just wondering if there were any rumors floating around about a new game coming out or anyone trying to get the license for it.

I would enjoy playing a new Star Trek RPG. God, I haven't played in maybe 20 years now but I have the FASA stuff somewhere in my closet o doom. haa. Yeah, I'd enjoy blowing the dust off of that and playing again sometime. Id have to re-familiarize myself with everything.

trekRPG.net is also a good source for all things TrekRPG.

Sadly with the advent of MMORPGS tabletop is even more of a niche-product. There is little to know money to be made with a licensed franchise like Star Trek.

LUG and Decipher found that out the hard way.

Traveller would port very easily to Trek.

Thousand Suns is a flexible system that can easily be adjusted to Star Trek.

Never really done the tabletop thing apart from an instance where I went with a friend to a get-together in 2007. I had a lot of fun blowing conventional wisdom sky-high with my peculiar character and even more peculiar actions. I think I left quite the impression on those folks.

A couple of my friends recently purchased the second-edition book for Mage: The Ascension. If I have enough fun with it, I'll be a lot more likely to start looking into science fiction workings than more fantasy stuff, so I think I'd enjoy getting familiarized with Trek's books.

The tabletop industry is on life support, though? That's disappointing.

Mage is pretty fun - probably my favorite of the White Wolf games in a close race with Hunter.

It's not on "Life Support" exactly. The bigger companies may be in trouble, but there is an indie scene that flourishes.
