SyFy's Alice

So what's the scoop here, BBS? Has anyone else heard about their take on the Alice in Wonderland story that's being aired tonight (12/6) and tomorrow (12/7) as a mini?

Is it good (for those who can see into the future, whether by, ahem, other means, or by pure clarivoyance)? Will it be good? Will it be awful?

Anybody know anything at all?

The reviews I've read (from reliable sources) say it's not as good as Tin Man. And since I wasn't blown away by Tin Man (good cast and visuals, lousy script), I'm not going to bother with Alice.

It doesn't look very good to my eyes. Just a timely cash-in to roughly coincide with Tim Burton's theatrical version of the tale. But I suppose Kathy Bates has to eat.

Just a timely cash-in to roughly coincide with Tim Burton's theatrical version of the tale.

I don't think the upcoming Burton film had much, if anything, to do with Syfy making Alice. The motivation was most likely the fact that Tin Man drew the best ratings of any Syfy miniseries to date, so they decided to do something similar and Alice was a natural choice.

I don't think the upcoming Burton film had much, if anything, to do with Syfy making Alice. The motivation was most likely the fact that Tin Man drew the best ratings of any Syfy miniseries to date, so they decided to do something similar and Alice was a natural choice.

Yeah. The cash-in will come from The Asylum group around the time of the actual movie. I suspect it'll be something like Hatter's Wonderland or Alice and the Mad Hatter. It'll involve monsters and Zombies too.

And an obligatory sex scene.

Speaking as someone who is just more cynical, I'm highly doubtful that this project wasn't chosen at least in part because of Burton's film. There are plenty of directions SyFy could have gone after Tin Man, but they chose to do Alice.

EDIT: I'm surprised the Asylum hasn't announced their Alice cash-in yet, actually. But there's still time to complete a film on their level.

I don't know. After an updating of The Wizard of Oz -- a famous tale about the journey of a young heroine through a strange, magical land -- Alice's Adventures in Wonderland seems like the obvious first choice for producers or network execs looking for something similar.

It's the same people who updated Wizard of Oz into Tin Man so there's only so many public domain type works out there to go with

Probably not. Never got really around to watching Tin Man due to the largey mixed reaction it got, but then, maybe I'll check it out someday eventually (or not).

Come on, Sy-Fy, make with that 'next Star Trek or Farscape' space opera you vaguely kinda sorta promised was in the works.

30 minutes in and I'd say it's even less interesting than Tin Man. But I guess I'll keep watching.

I agree, I think Tin Man is hugely overrated. Alice has one thing going for it, the fact it's only 4 hours and not 6.

The first part wasn't nearly as dreadful as Tin Man. Story feels like it's holding together a little more coherently than TM did. Jury's still out on Scorsone as Alice, but the rest of the cast has done a pretty good job with what they've been given so far. I'm expecting that to all fall apart tonight, though.
