Sydney Tamiia Poitier has already auditioned for Uhura?

I'm thinking it'll turn out to be one of those lovely ladies from the cast of Dreamgirls with Eddie Murphy. But not Beyoncé...

I think Sydney Tamiia Poitier would work for me, my question now is will Uhura finally get a first name in this movie example if she is introduced to say Kirk or someone and they say 'this is En. or Lt. Noyta Uhura'. Just a dumb thought.

I've only seen her on 'Veronica Mars', but she seemed like a decent actress. Could work.

Hot Gypsies!

I feel guilty just looking at her... so yes, please choose her. :p

There's a thread on IMDB where Sydney Tamiia Poitier says she's already auditioned for the Uhura role but hasn't heard back. Kind of intereting...
Here's the link

I dunno, this might be un-PC, but I think she's too light-skinned.

Hey, there's no way some black guy would get to play Kirk or Spock, right? So fair is fair. Uhura should LOOK black, dammit.

And that casting sheet was specific enough to say they were looking for someone of specifically Japanese ancestry to play Sulu, so assuming that's authentic, they ARE going to be looking for details like Uhura being dark enough to suit the role, just like they want a Kirk who isn't too tall (not over six foot). This isn't casting by affirmative action here.

She's 5'11". Cripes, she's also too tall.

I think she's too light too. They need a dark chick.

If they cast someone who's not as dark as Nichelle was, some might even interpret it as racist

No kidding, there would be protests, count on it. But I don't care about that so much, screw those people, Trek shouldn't be PC to please non-fans who weren't paying attention to it till it did something they could fit into their stupid little agendas. Trek should adhere to stupid little details like Uhura's skin color and Kirk's height to please us, the impossible to please fans!

Based on the pics on IMDB.com...she is hoooooooooooooooot!   I've never seen her act however. Though she is hooooooooooooot!

I'm glad somebody else said it first, but she is a little on the white-looking side. I feel very weird saying that, but that was my first impression.

i am sorry, but who is going to protest saying that Sydney Poitier's daughter is not black enough...that is just absurd.

It may be absurd but it’s not unlikely.

Well, it certainly isn't unlikely given that it's already happened here.

Fortunately, if Poitier is cast and others reaffirm this objection, it'll matter about as much as it did in this thread: not one iota.

I'm liking this bit of potential casting. She's a gorgeous woman and a decent actress, which frankly is probably enough: I don't think the Uhura role is ever likely to call for too much heavy thespian lifting. And while Trekmovie.com notes, "Poitier is 34 which is a few years older than they appear to be looking for that role," you could have fooled me. I'm actually surprised she's that old; from seeing her on V. Mars and elsewhere, I would have figured mid to late twenties.
